Not as good as other Sam Smith products, but still very good. Not much nose. Somewhat confusing, tastes like the younger (more mild) brother of the Nut Brown.
Lighter flavor with a smooth finish. Excellent beer to introduce to a newbie. LinusStick (1848), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

I have been putting off trying a Sam Smith beer because I try to find more obscure beers first and jolly-O what I have been missing, mate! I don’t even know if people in England say jolly-o or if I have been watching too much TV, but nonetheless this is an awsome beer! The pour was a amber inviting color with a 2 finger head that laced nicely. The taste was all malt with a hoppy finish. I was expecting an IPA-ish or APA-ish taste (hence the name) but found this to be a delicious ESB that I will have again. Cheers, blokes! dpbhoosier (51), USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2007 Bottle. Amber color with healthy head. Light to medium bodied. English malt aroma and subdued hoppiness compared to the American craft ESB I’ve experienced. Very drinkable beer. jonnabrix (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 6, 2007 A great deal of citrus and bitter in the aroma. The flavor has some of those hop notes, with light malt, and then more hops in the aftertaste. Smooth going down, with a fair amount of carbonation, this is solid. cbrixius (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2007 Pours pretty healthfully with a two finger foam head. Clear amber hue. Nose wasn’t too exciting, probably too preserved. Nice english hop taste but the maltiness seemed to take a back seat. Overall, OK but thornecb (1802), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 3, 2007 Pours a deep blood orange into a shaker. Fluffy tan micro head does not recede. Flat with light malt flavors and a back of the mouth bitter finish. Nihon (240), Vernon, Connecticut, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 1, 2007 Sweet aftertaste, nicely balance out the slight bitterness. I agree with another reviewer that it taste more like a brown ale. Good english beer. KDorgan12 (169), Memphis, Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 1, 2007 Bottle. Tasted more like a brown than a pale - but a good brown. Maltier than a typical pale and not as much hops as I would expect. I tried this after the Brown Ale and thought the labels had been swapped.
