Poured a dark brown with a dissipating creamy light brown head. Aroma was choccy malt, coffee, hop. The flavour was roasty toasty with more chocolate malt, coffee and a hint of caramel. Not bad, but its all a bit ho hum and I was starting to grow very weary of this towards the end of the glass. Not one I’ll be rushing to make a repeat purchase of. Think there’s much better in the ss quiver. emgesp (10), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 4, 2009 Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. Some lacing as the head fades away. Very nice looking beer.
There is this unique aroma that you only get from Samuel Smith’s beers. Dark fruits, and a smokey fried bacon aroma. It is a hard aroma to really pin down, but is so unique.
Strong smoke and slight peaty flavors dominate this beer. Chocolate flavors are masked by the smoke and a little dark fruits add to the complexity.
Medium body with perfect carbonation.
A very hearty beer that I would not recommend during a hot summer day. This is one to enjoy late fall and all of winter.

Unfortunately far from complex, not fruit flavors or spices are noticeable, and it leaves a chalky aftertaste. rocbyter (926), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 18, 2008 Bottle that has been in my parents fridge for a while. A beer my brother always used to love and now that I found it in there, its time to rate it, since I was too lazy today to buy some new beer. Pours black with a big 3 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and malty with a nice light hint of coffee on the edge of the nose. Taste is sweet rich malty with some hopped bitterness. Overall a pretty good porter, a bit too much of something I cant quite put my fingers on.
