Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned only.
Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smith’s date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the brewery’s underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle.

Bottle. Moderate cookie for the malt, citrusy hops, heavy must and mold for the yeast, with wood, vinegar and toffee in the background. Head is small, fizzy that thins to wispy with larger bubbles, off-white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark copper. Palate is medium, watery but a little slick, with a lively carbonation and a dry finish. Very bold and deep, my brother said this was off compared to the last one he had, so I’ll give it a re-rate when I get a chance.

Pours pale amber colur with tan head. Nose has a delightful candied character, almost reminding me of holiday candy cane peppermint. On the palate the malt comes through with a biscuity quality, perhaps black tea, and a soft candied sweetness. Easy drinking.

Bottle from Root Cellar. Poured hazy dark brown color with medium light brown creamy head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Medium toasted malt and wood aroma with a fruit tone. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy fruit and wood flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Good interesting brew.

Muddy, pulpy orange-red body, thin off-white ring of carbonation. Yeasty nose, chalky, with sour oak and leafy must. Sour body with peachy fruit notes, caramel, and musty, cobwebby oak. Interesting.

550ml bottle served in a snifter. Bottle conditioned. Poured a clear amber with a finger of tan head. Malty aroma with some carmelized sugar and a bit of hops. Medium to full bodied. Malt predominates with dark fruit. Some hops in the finish. Just a hint of the oak. I had really high expectations for this as I am a big fan of British beers, but I found it a bit lacking and overpriced.

Hazy amber pour with a thick off white head. Sweet malt, vanilla and oak aroma. Sweet tangy malt taste with touches of vanilla oak.
