DarkElf (2661), La Jolla, California, USA Oct 13, 2004 (Draft: San Diego Brewing Company in San Diego, CA) This is one outrageously nutty beer, probably too nutty for the style, but I really don’t care, it’s frickin’ delicious! The nose is very strongly nutty, quite malty, and a bit sour; And the flavor echoes the nose, being strongly malty and nutty, very toasty, moderately bitter; The mild sweetness fits well; Medium bodied, but rich, velvety and smooth; Ruddy mahogany color; Bubbly, light tan head maintains a thin layer, leaving thick, bubbly lacing behind Ibrew2or3 (1705), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jan 13, 2008 On tap @ San Diego Brewing brewpub. Pours a clear deep amber with lasting tan head. The aroma has a nice load of roasted malts and nuttiness along with a hint of fruity esters. The taste is rich maltiness along with highly roasted malts and a big hazel nut nuttiness. Lots of flavor here, yum. There is a faint malt astringency mixing in nicely to help cut all the roasty malts, sweeter malts and nuttiness. Very good Nut Brown. bsierra (166), Vista, California, USA Jun 2, 2008 On tap at SDBC. Pours a deep dark amber/brown hue. The nose is that of roasted chestnuts, and it has really nice retention and prickly carbonation. The flavor is extremely malty, with hints of molasses and smooth hops balance. The end is crisp and flavorful. This is a very good brown ale! fordest (1684), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Jul 10, 2005 Draft at SDBC. Maybe I should stop being so hard on brown ales. I have found another one I actually like. Dark brown with a decent head. Left nice lacing. Aromas of mocha and roastiness. Flavors were the same with a decent nutty aftertaste. Pretty tasty. DYCSoccer17 (2013), Davis, California, USA Apr 5, 2005 Tap. Nice roasty aroma with lots of chocolate maltiness and cocoa powder. Smells good. Moderately hazy brown color with a light tan head. Quite roasty and toasty with a nice sweet finish. Coffee notes and chocolate are present. Has a great body and mouthfeel. Good work.
