Dec 21, 2007 At the brewpub. An almot black pour with a frothy tan head. An aroma of roasted malt. A fairly sweet front followed by a lgihth bitter finish. Cask carbonation along with a smooth solid palate. The best beer I had while I was here, a good offering. And then I had the Belgian Gold yum!!

Jun 13, 2007 Tasted at San Marcos. Black with creamy tan head. Aroma of yeast and chocolate. Light bodied watery palate. Sweet/sour chocolate taste and a disappointing finish.

Apr 4, 2006 Cask at San Marcos Brewing
Dark brown/black with tan head and lots of lacing. Nose of roasted chocolate and vanilla, light creamy body. Lots of rich clean flavor and no astringency. Nice stout, very creamy and satisfying. I’d have rather gotten a pint of this than dredge through their whole sampler tray.

Feb 16, 2006 Draft at brewpub, early Dec ’05. Deep opaque brown pour. Roast aroma, and unfortunately, buttery diactyl present. Some roast and toasty malt flavors, but a fair amount of butterscotch too. Slick mouthfeel. I’d like to rerate this at some point with a different batch - I felt it had a lot of potential.

Dec 15, 2005 @ SM Brewpub, cask: Very dark brown with a tan head. Sweet and roasty malt with butterscotch (damn why must they do this to me I was looking foward to this beer) Flavor some roast some toast but thin and watery, where’s the oatmeal. Little flavor. This was a let down.

Jun 14, 2004 Updated: Mar 1, 2005(Cask Draft: San Marcos Brewery & Grill in San Marcos, CA) This oatmeal stout features a moderate dark roasted and oatmeal flavor, but it’s a bit lighter in style than others in this category. Moderate bitterness seems in balance. Light smokiness in the finish. The mouthfeel is a bit thin on body for the style, and doesn’t have much carbonation, but that’s cask for ya’. The nose has moderate dark roasted aromas, but very little in the way of oatmeal. Very dark brown, not jet black, and shows a deep red at the edges. Tan head has good retention and leaves a dense blanket of lacing.

Apr 25, 2004 This stout pours with a very dark red-brown body topped by a thick, tan head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with a very slight roastiness. A pretty boring aroma. The flavor, however, is pretty nice. Roasty coffee notes flood the taste buds. It has a nice sweetness underneath and a nice creaminess. I would have another based on the tase alone. Full bodied and smooth.
