ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Oct 11, 2005 Updated: Dec 30, 2005On draught at the brewpub, 9/30/2005. Pours a very thick looking, deep yellow-brass-golden color. Head is ample and frothy, well-retained. Clarity has somewhat of a chill haze when first served, due to how cold it is served, but becomes quite clear as it warms. Not much lacing, if any, was left behind on the glass. Smells of thick, doughy, sugary, rich malted barley and grainy pale/munic malts. Fresh herbs and grass, with light yellow fruits present in the background. Flavor comes on strong with rich honey and bitter hops, leafy, lightly floral and peppery. Thick, wonderful feeling texture. This is not some watery, overcarbonated mess of a helles. I was surprised by how substantial the malt is and how fresh the hops are. Dough, grains and honey for miles, with well-balanced and most importantly, highly apparent hops. Screams of quality brewing. Just wish I could get a little more yeastiness from it. willblake (1942), Long Branch, New Jersey, USA Oct 7, 2005 09.30.05 Tap at brewpub. Crystal clear pale straw with tall and lasting white head. Cereal aroma, lightly toasty, lightly floral, hints of pepper and citrus. Super balance. I could drink this all night at a ball game. MrRomero (1894), Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany Oct 16, 2005 At the brewery: another winner from Sandlot. Poured golden yellow with a full white head. Light fruit aroma. Mild yeasty flavor with a touch of fruit. Nice body. A very nice beer. Sandlot makes some nice stuff. brentfeesh (937), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Oct 4, 2005 Updated: Oct 23, 2007Sampled with Ratebeer group after Great Divide tasting during GABF. Poured a nice yellow with light white head. Good looking carbonation. Aroma was not my favorite. Light grains, grassy, and metallic. The flavor was basic. Light grains, straw, with some spicy noble-ish hops in the finish. Refreshing medium body. Overall, easy drinking and simple. Drink cold.
had this again at GABF 2007. Much imiproved scores on both flavor and taste. I noted a crisper aroma with dryer earthy hops, and a flavor that was similar to the aroma. Very quafable and quenching. I thought this was quite well done. (it was called "Where the Helles Bill"). whaleman (2168), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 4, 2005 Draught at the Sandlot. Clear golden body with mild carbonation and a clear white head. Nice fresh malt aroma with a pineapple citrusy character and hop qualities of dry hay and grass. A pleasant but significantly hoppy helles with grass and pepper notes. Semi-dry with moderate acidity and medium-high bitterness. Comes across mildly astringent, but good overall.
