CaptainCougar (4663), Rockville, Maryland, USA Dec 16, 2007 On tap at the 2007 GABF: Pours a transparent deep golden with a frothy, well-lacing white head. Aroma of semi-dry, lightly grainy pale malt with good smoky notes. Body starts with nice mild toasty sweetness and great smoky balance. Very smooth, drinkable, and true to style. beerking99 (199), USA Dec 4, 2007 At the brewpub, Oct 2007: Awesome clone of the Schlenkerla Helles. Wonderful smoky/bacon aroma, backed by sweet malt notes. Beautiful crytal clear, plae gold, with a pure white frothy head. Flavor is sblime, with great smoky-phenolic notes balancing the soft malty character. The Schlenkerla Helles is not smoked, it only picks up smoke character from the grinding mill. I wonder, given the name of this beer, if they do the same. goldtwins (3738), Nesconset, New York, USA Oct 31, 2007 GABF 2007: Poured a crystal clear gold with an off-white head. The smoke was dominant but pleasant. Smokey and phenolic. Seemingly wheaty flavor with toasted cereal notes on the finish. Good smokey flavor. awaisanen (1157), Irvine, California, USA Oct 16, 2007 GABF 2007. Delicate smoke aroma with a pleasant bacon character, but light and lacking any of the heavy salty or meaty characters that sometimes accompany the style. At the same time, it’s not overly complex, but who says simplicity can’t be elegant? No noticeable esters or other yeast characters; exceptionally clean. Transparent golden color with gentle shades of copper and a frothy head of off-white. Light bodied with a healthy spritz of frothy carbonation and a dry finish. Clean rauchmalt flavor with some pale crackery malt for balance. Schlenkerla Light? Certainly not as intense with the smoke infused flavor, but it’s the same basic idea. This is the kind of smoked beer that could be consumed everyday, and it conjures up images of what a helles would taste like if the malt were kiln dried over a fire. Well made. tiggmtl (4179), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 8, 2005 Fair smokiness to the sweet caramel, malt forward aroma. Clear, deep, copper coloured body with a low white head that recedes to ring. Strong caramel and smoked malt flavours blend together very nicely with light finishing bitterness that keeps the sweet malts from becoming cloying. Light body with strong, lively carbonation. Sampled on tap at the Sandlot at Coors Field.
