Commercial Description:
Santa Cruz Ale Works Hefeweizen This blonde colored ale has its roots firmly planted in Germany but has adapted well to suit the taste of the American public. By nature it is unfiltered as Hefeweizen means wheat beer with yeast in German. Unlike our Bavarian counterparts, this wheat beer does not have the same banana and clove undertones or esters. These flavors are typically formed during fermentation are not the result of adding spices or fruit flavorings. Our hefe starts off with a nice, balanced wheat malt profile and then finishes off with a light lemon/orange citrus essence. Approx 5.3% Alc./Vol.

Sampler at the brewery. Pours a thin head over a pale yellow (SRM 3) cloudy body.......nose is spice ?allspice, citrus (lemon, orange)......taste has a tiny bit of clove, some lemon with a slightly bitter finish....Mouth feel is light, carbonation low. This is a fairly typical Hefeweizen, but has a great deal more nose and flavor than most American Wheat Ales. Tasting of 10/09/09.

Bottle. Pours a pretty orange amber color with a white head. Aroma was light banana and clove which is funny because they describe this beer as a West Coast wheat beer and not overly clovey. Flavor is good, dry with some spice. Medium palate. A better alternative to the Hefs from Widmer and Pyramid but not as complex as many of the wheat beers from Germany or Belgium.

22oz bottle 4/7/09 (BevMo-Torrance)-Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma of citrus and clove. Flavors of banana, citrus, hops, and clove. This light bodied Hefe was not bad but a little weak.

I was shocked to find out this is listed at 6.5%... Pale hazy yellow with almost a twinge of lime/yellow/flourescence... aroma is non descript as is the flavor... Not the traditional "of bavarian descent" flavors i would come to expect from a quality hefeweizen... Very Drinkable on a positive note which leads me to believe it cant be 6.5%...

22oz bottle. Poured a medium and slightly hazy golden color with a larger sized -4+ finger-, frothy white head. Aromas of bananas, some spiciness, and lighter wheat. Spiced banana chips. Tastes of bananas -lots more than in the aromas-, fruitiness, and I was getting apple juice. Thinner and flatter -from the large head, the flatness was a surprise- body. This one was kinda of weird. The aromas and tastes really didint match each other either.
