Commercial Description:
Santa Cruz Ale Works I.P.A. Another excellent example of how brewers out West can manipulate hops. Originally designed by the British, this style was made with more hops and alcohol in order to survive the long travelling ships from Great Britain to India, at the time a new English Colony. This lightly colored ale is very aggressively hopped from start to finish. From the first sip the hop bitterness and aroma are overwhelming then rounds off nicely with a citrusy finish. Including dry-hopping we use over 30 lbs. per batch ƒ lbs. per bbl) Approx 6.5% Alc.

22 oz bomber from Roth’s Vista Market Salem OR. Clear slighly burnt golden coloured ale, as a huge rocky off white head. Aroma is mainlly of grapefruit like hopping, sweet and slightly spicy. Taste is a bit of a let down, its mainlly sweet a sort of artificial sweetner type sweet, there are hops but they are buried for an instant under the sweetness, the hops do emerge near the end. Watery palate..but the aftertaste is OK. Overall dissapointing IPA, coulda been way better.

Santa Cruz Ale Works IPA is a clear, golden ale with a small, off white head. It has an aroma of pine resin. It’s light bodied and crisp with a slightly gritty finish. It’s a resiny flavor that’s well balanced. The aftertaste is long and resiny. It’s a simple and tasty beer.

The solid basis of an IPA. Great aroma, nice hazy appearance, fantastic lacing. Generic bitterness, not much late-kettle hop additions. With a little bit more on the hop front this could be a solid IPA, but as it stands, a bit thin with a solid base. Improve the recipe.

The beer pours a hazy amber with a small frothy white head that leaves lacing. Aroma is vague hops, a bit fruity and grassy but not strong and a bit sweet. Flavor is that of a proper IPA. Hop flavor and bitterness, atop a decent caramel malt background. Real nice bitter finish. Can’t see why it’s rated poorly, I really have to disagree. Not a top IPA, but solidly decent.

A hazed golden ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, a lightly pungeant and cheesy hops, light citrus, yet nice. In mouth, a nice light with good caramel malt, with light hops, more like an APA. Medium bodied. On tap at Russian River Beer and BBQ Revival, August 15 2009.

22 oz bottle Market of Choice. Pours light orange with a thick capping of white head and big lacing. Aroma is a solid mixture of pine and citrus hops with a decent caramel malt backing. Flavor was much the same with a bit of a metallic finish. Not sure about the hate on this one, it’s not great but it certainly wasn’t bad either.

On tap. Pours a hazy and opaque yellow with a white head. Fat, intense citrus aroma. Medium body, some fruit, citrus from the hops and an astringent, bitter finish. 090709

22 oz bottle via Hagen. Pours a semi hazy amber with a small off-white head. Nose is grapefruit and phenols. Taste is most grapefruit, some pine, white pepper, some yeasty off flavors, diacytl. Finish/aftertaste is astringant and a bit metallic, even a little cardboardy. Bitter without much flavor...Body is light. Finish is dry. Do not care a lot for the hop profile or the brewing process on this one...the description says super hoppy..nope, sorry guys, super bitter/metallic does not equal super hoppy. Move more of the hops from the 60 minute part of your boil to the 10 minute or flame-out, and then we will talk about super hoppy ;) I am now going to add some Simcoe hop pellets via French press...mmmm...10 minutes later.... now we have a very nice beer.
