Commercial Description:
June 21, 2007 - Santa Cruz, California : The coffee roasters of Coffee Cat/Lulu Carpenters and the brewers of Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing teamed up in a new organic beer adventure. The new beer, Peoples Porter, is available for tasting at the brewery’s tasting room. The brewers’ claim, ’if money’s got you down, you can get your coffee fix and your beer in one pint sized punch with the Peoples Porter!’ Emily Thomas and Tom Perozzi first brewed a test batch at the National Homebrewers, ’Big Brew,’ the first Saturday in May, in a 10 gallon kettle in the alley behind the brewery with eleven other homebrewers. Everyone loved the small batch so much, brewer, Chad Brill went ahead with a full run production. The sweet aroma and spicy flavor of the Fair Trade, Organic coffee beans are definitely present in this subtle porter. The beer has a crisp dry finish with a nose that will make you think you are sipping on a cup of coffee. The body is deep and rich with a hint of sweetness, but the smoky overtones of the Guatemalan coffee beans are clearly there. Beer loving folks can get a sample of it at the Brewery’s new tasting room in the Swift Street Courtyard, 402 Ingalls Street, any day between noon and ten. The coffee beans come from the Finca Vista Hermosa farm, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Shade grown on steep hillsides, the family farm has been producing one of the most elegantly processed beans for three generations. They are then expertly roasted at the Coffee Cat shop in Scotts Valley, by Rory Phares and Roman Bondarenko.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Dark brown pour. Lots in the aroma. Roasted caramel and dark chocolate, mocha. Black coffee on the taste. Bitter finish. Seriously reminds me of early mornings at Granddad’s house when I tried to choke down his pure black coffee in an effort to be like him. Memories count for a lot here.

22oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours a deep coffee brown with a frothy beige head, not much lacing. Nice nose of coffee and roasted malts. Flavor was coffee, was quick and dry on the palate.

From a 22 oz bottle this poured nearly black with a tan head and lot of lacing. Nose is coffee, chocolate, and burnt malts. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is dominated by the coffee and the finish is dry. Very decent porter.

650 ml bottle from Beverages4less. This one pours a dark brown with amber highlights. The head is beige with fair retention. The aroma is moderate in strength with coffee and mocha. The flavor features earthy chocolate, mocha, sweetened coffee and a bit of dirt. The finish is medium in duration and dry. The mouthfeel is just a bit on the thin side. Overall: A very session-able porter, not great but not bad, I’d reach for it again in a heartbeat.

Bottle from Pizza Port bottle shop: Aroma is a perfect blend between a creamy diary and fresh ground coffee beans while still smelling like a natural porter. Viewed by me as a dark tinted brown color with a small sizing of head and a cool silk screened style print on the bottle. The flavor was shallow compared to the smell I got from the nose but there was a decent chocolate presence with minor amounts of authentic coffee flavors.

Pours deep brown with copper edges and thin mocha head. I get a full roasty aroma with coffee, roasted malts, earthy organic notes and a bit of charred malts. The taste begins with both sweet malts and a layer of organic-ness. It then quickly turns coffee, burnt malts and a tang of hop bitterness.
