Commercial Description:
June 21, 2007 - Santa Cruz, California : The coffee roasters of Coffee Cat/Lulu Carpenters and the brewers of Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing teamed up in a new organic beer adventure. The new beer, Peoples Porter, is available for tasting at the brewery’s tasting room. The brewers’ claim, ’if money’s got you down, you can get your coffee fix and your beer in one pint sized punch with the Peoples Porter!’ Emily Thomas and Tom Perozzi first brewed a test batch at the National Homebrewers, ’Big Brew,’ the first Saturday in May, in a 10 gallon kettle in the alley behind the brewery with eleven other homebrewers. Everyone loved the small batch so much, brewer, Chad Brill went ahead with a full run production. The sweet aroma and spicy flavor of the Fair Trade, Organic coffee beans are definitely present in this subtle porter. The beer has a crisp dry finish with a nose that will make you think you are sipping on a cup of coffee. The body is deep and rich with a hint of sweetness, but the smoky overtones of the Guatemalan coffee beans are clearly there. Beer loving folks can get a sample of it at the Brewery’s new tasting room in the Swift Street Courtyard, 402 Ingalls Street, any day between noon and ten. The coffee beans come from the Finca Vista Hermosa farm, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Shade grown on steep hillsides, the family farm has been producing one of the most elegantly processed beans for three generations. They are then expertly roasted at the Coffee Cat shop in Scotts Valley, by Rory Phares and Roman Bondarenko.

22oz bottle. Very dark, just a smidgen of light showing through, tan head. Slightly sweet and a little roasted malt aroma, some bitter chocolate. Bitter roastiness, more coffee, not too bad. It left a long bitter aftertaste though.

Thanks IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours a fizzy dark brown with nose of roasted malt, coffee, and maybe coconut. Flavor is lots of roast with tart vinegary highlights. There is also a bit of hops with some sugariness present, too. Finishes dry with malt and sweetness lingering. Medium-bodied and yellow lacing goodness in this decent porter.

Bottle, courtesy Ibrew2or3. Brownish tan color, gray lacing, some reddish highlights. Dry coffee nose, some dark fruit, spices like chiles and cinnamon, slight roast. Flavor has slick coffee and distant tart, roast, grainy dry malt, some odd fruits. Smooth, thin, not that balanced and very boring.

Bottle courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Pours a chocolate cola brown with thin tan head. Aroma is roasted and malty with notes of wood, vanilla, chocolate, ripe dark fruit, coffee and some hints of toffee. Flavor is sweet and malty, not as roasted as the nose, with notes of chocolate, sugar plum, dark fruits, some hints of coffee toward finish. Generally medium body with a sweet raisin finish.

Brown pour with a small tan head. Coffee and roasted malts in the aroma, with more of the roast and hops in the flavor. Slight bitterness and you can feel the caffeine in there.

Bottle from bottle barn. Black with a small white head. Chocolate and coffee aroma and a good coffee taste with some caramel notes. Well done.

Bomber. Poured black with fast dissipating beige head. Aroma of coffee and malt. Rather thin flavour, coffee, malt and roast. Not as full as you would expect from the aroma. Expresso like finish, with burnt toast notes.

Bottle. Black pour with very little head. Aroma is coffee roast, roast malt, and toffee. Burnt but sweet cola like flavor... lots of roast. Kinda thin palate.
