Commercial Description:
Chicken Killer Barley Wine is the revolutionary beer that will someday define America's unique Barley Wine style. It is brewed with twice the ingredients of the Santa Fe Brewing Company's other beers, and only half the usual amount of liquid is extracted from these ingredients. This makes one strong beer. At over ten percent alcohol, Chicken Killer is actually as strong as wine, but this is not to say that it is difficult to drink. On the contrary; be careful with this one. The flavors of the beer are at first as overwhelming as the intense Santa Fe sun. But in the same way our sun gives us the unrivaled brilliant colors of Santa Fe, the potency of Chicken Killer gives us the remarkable spectrum of flavors that can be found in no other beer, in no other city. If you did not have the opportunity to try last year's vintage, come try this year's! Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Carastan, 135-165 l. Crystal Hops: Chinook, Hallertau, Crystal

Bomber bought in Santa Fe. Pours a copper hue with quickly diminishing head. First sips reminded me of prune juice. This is a rather one dimensional beer with an odd acidic, astringent fruity aftertaste. Not one of my favorite barleywines. Probably 15 years ago I tried a Santa Fe Brewery offering called Tree Spirit Stout, which I found amazing. Too bad it’s gone.

Bottle. Sweet cherry/apricot, barley malt and alcohol aroma. Cloudy orange-amber color with small head. Sweet apricot and barley malt flavor with a moderate alcohol finish. Good straight forward barley wine - nicely drinkable.

Dark amber color, hazy, with a generous creamy head. The aroma is a good mix of malt, caramel, hops; creamy. Good caramel flavor, sweet; correct bitterness, but a bit dusty in the end. I perceive it as a Strong Ale with American hopping, imperfect Barley Wine.

Years ago I couldn’t drink a barley wine without holding my nose. These days, I love ’em. This one was brown with little to no head. Very sweet, spicy, with the taste of raisins.

22 ounce bottle squired in a trade some time ago. Pours a dark brown color with a large white head. A sweet Belgian-like nose; candies, bananas, spices. The flavor is similar; a smooth sweet beer, some Belgian Strong Ale characteristics, candies and very rich sweet malts. Decent.

Raisins in a glass. Simple as that. Pours deep mohogany brown, cloudy, with thin tan head that retains well. Large bubbles. Nose is citrusy, sweet molasses or cocoa, and a slight brown bread aroma. Palate is all raisins. Sweet, almost too sweet, with a distinct raisin taste that I cannot get past. Finish: raisins.

Bottle atleast 1 year old: pours a very bubbly ice tea brown with a medium soapy tan head with some lacing. Aroma is grainy with plenty of caramel malt and a little toffee. Also some sweet sugars and an aroma of agimg hops, some underlying fruit character too. Flavor is a little weak at first then warms quickly. Lots of grainy bitterness and flavor, slight caramel and just to much grain bitterness, some older hop flavor too. Not a great BW but drinkable.

Pours a beautiful ruby red, with a slight hint of copper. Two-fingers of loose off-white foam sits on top. Retention is decent and lacing is quite good. Good caramel malt presence. Hints of brown sugar and dark fruits. Good spicey hop presence. All-in-all, the nose is somewhat light. Big notes of wheat are swirled with notes of caramel. Mild flavors of ripe, dark fruits. Hints of bread with brown sugar. Light hops spice, in the finish. For an american barleywine, this is actually pretty good. Surprise! They haven’t tried to kill the brew by throwing 12 metric tons of hops into every bottle. On the upper end of medium bodied. Nice and creamy, yet still remains light enough to not overpower. Despite the fact that I think it needs a little more body, this is a pretty darn drinkable bottle of barleywine style ale.

the NM tick courtesy of a trade. Bottle, pours a dark red with a tall frothy light tan head. Great sugary nose of sugar cane, alcohol, brown sugar, and yeast. Sweet malty base with some carmel and toasted malt flavors. Brown sugar and a cardomine spice....strange but nice. Ends with a lingering yeasty sweet/sourness. Reminds me more of a belgian strong ale. Either way, it’s a fine beer.
