Commercial Description:
A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself; and it packs a punch, so much so that its drinkability rapidly gives way to a euphoric intoxication that only a true Porter drinker can understand. Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Crystal, 70-80 l. Crystal, Chocolate Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Willamette

12 oz bottle courtesy of Soonah. Pours a dark brown/black with a 1/2" beige head. Aroma is chocolate malt with a touch of ash. Also, hints of nuts and fruit. Moderate body with a full, creamy texture. Flavor is a nice blend of chocolate, nuts, dark fruits and a bit of smoke. Very nice well crafted porter.

Pours dark with copper highlights. One finger mocha head. Nose shows chocolate, light smoke, grain, mild coffee, caramel, some roast. Flavor is similar, lightly smoked grain, chocolate and coffee, little bitterness and roast. Nice balanced porter.

This porter isn’t too good. A decent aroma but the flavor is strained. A bit smoky but also a bit too alcoholic. Not that great.

Almost black with a tan head. Sour dough malt aroma with some roasty nuts and cardboard. Smooth medium body. Nice lightly sweet chocolate malt flavors with roasted nuts.

Bottle: Nice medium black with a retentive tan head. The nose is light, but what’s there is dark and roasty with some coffee and dark chocolate notes, some astringency, which is unusual for a porter, and a nice rich fruity note. I’m surprised this doesn’t have any roasted barley or black patent for how it tastes. Minerally mouthfeel with some additional dark chocolate notes. On the stouter side of porter, with a nice body and balanced tail. Good!

Dark brown red pour. Smells of sweet chocolate and coffee kick. Roasted notes abound. Tastes of roasted malts and coffee ground. Finishes with easy thoughts. Not bad.

Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Opaque and looks almost black, but is really a very dark reddish-brown. Tan head fades to a thin layer with slight lacing. Aroma of slightly sweet malts with chocolate and coffee undertones. Not much roasted malt or hop presence in the smell. Pretty weak for a Porter. Semi-sweet chocolate with a light roast and coffee character. Very little bitterness. Roasted malts became more prominent at the end and as the beer warmed. Very smooth for a regular Porter. Low to moderate carbonation, medium body, ever so slightly warming. Easy drinking Porter with a nice smoothness and chocolate malt backbone.
