Taverner (442), San Ramon, California, USA Jun 17, 2008 From the Papago Cooler. Very malty - malty to the point of too much. Lots of roasty malt flavors with very little hop profile to provide even the slightest balance. Slight metallic taste that I hope dissipates after some decanting.
Zinister (877), Houston, Texas, USA Aug 22, 2008 Thanks to bockyhorsey for this bottle. Shared with KAggie97. Deep black pour with no head. Nose is ashy, roasted malts with nut aromas and smoked wood. Flavor is similar, but the palate is a bit watered down, so hard to really enjoy what this beer could be. I agree with KAgg that this brewery always seems to have a good base, but just can get the beers to where they need to be. nbutler11 (163), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Aug 20, 2008 Pours like a parfait from the bottle with almost 4 different layers starting at a thick molasses color and building up to a soapy tan head. Dark cocoa and charcoal on the nose. Suprisingly light body for its appearance with an almost watery coffee flavor. KAggie97 (1887), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle shared with Zinister. Thanks! Pours a nice dark black but with no head and a bit of a thin body. Aroma is a cigar tobacco nut with a flavor of smoky chocolate nut. Average mouthfeel for a beer (and a brewer, for that matter) that just seems to not be able to get over the hump and be a great beer (brewer). Ughsmash (3004), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottled. Poured clear deeper brown with a very nice cap of tan head that stuck around for a while. The aroma had sweet milky chocolates and coffee with light roast to it.. some earth accents and the faintest medicinal notes. The flavor had dry-roasted sweeter chocolates with a base layer of sweet caramel.. the edges had light coffee and earthy bitterness.. simple, but on the tasty side. Medium-minus bodied and drier on the palate with coffee bitterness sticking around a little while on the finish. Gregis (911), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Jul 29, 2008 Bottle purchased at Beertopia in Omaha, NE. Pours a dark chocolate brown (almost black) with a thin tan head. The nose is like a chocolaty nut brown with a light coffee note in the background. Light to medium-bodied and slick transitioning to prickly carbonation at the swallow. Chocolaty, nutty and roasty it finishes lightly dry with a somewhat astringent coffee/mineral conclusion. This is one of those sum-of- the-parts beers that comes together better than any of its individual components. Not bad.
