Nose is fresh and toasty, lots of roast and cold pressed coffee notes along with a light plum and apricot background. The flavor is malty and full body, dry, but still like a dessert beer with its roasty qualities. Tasty finish to boot. ALLOVATE (1126), Perth, Australia
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 4, 2005 I took a shine instantly to this one before I even sat down to pour it, and wasn’t disappointed at all as it turned out to be great Black Beer. Tasted from the bottle and poured into a tall Tulip glass. The dense short tan head formed quickly, atop a clear black body with ruby sides. The head lasted until the finish and webbed well down the glass. An intense molasses, burnt sugar and Marmite aroma gave hints of the beer inside the glass. In the mouth the initial roasted coffee and grain flavours were standouts, with a mild leafy hop note to make it interesting. Dark chocolate added sweetness, liquorice added a degree of gumminess and biscuity yeast tones added smoothness. Mildly carbonated and Medium light bodied. I really enjoyed this one!!! The body is slightly to thin for my liking but then again, its not a stout! (although its not a million miles away from it either in the flavour department). Overall, this is far and away the best widely available beer in Japan, and if I dont feel like the big trip to a proper beer shop, this is what i drink. I like it. KnutAlbert (3217), Oslo, Norway

Dark beer with red glow, fine head.
A bit bread-lie dryness. Some cereals. Sweetness underneath, roasted grain, coffee. yngwie (5071), Kristiansand, Norway

Mocha, coffee and chocolate in the aroma. Mocha, some fruityness, chocolate and coffee, but not much hoppy bitterness. Not much fruityness or bitterness at all, actually. Still pleasant, indeed. Medium to full, quite dry mouthfeel. Mocha finish. A really pleasant and balanced beer. A bit strange saying it’s balanced, as it’s sure on the dark side, but at least it feels balanced in a way. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 11, 2007 Big creamy shiny darkish beige head. Deep dark red barely translucent body with lots of carbonation. Harmonic roasty caramel and milk coffee aroma with metallic notes. Aroma is too faint for a 7. Sweetish roasty metallic taste of licorice and coffee. Slightly watery. Dry metallic coffee aftertaste. Quite nice, a bit like a mild stout. (0.33l can.)
