To the nose there are scents of nuts molasass, caramel and earth. First taste was smooth but slightly watery. Flavours of molasass, malt and a little coffee. Finish was thick and slightly sweet. You know... as far as bottled "Black and Tans" go, this one lacks the refreshing, effervescent quality of what I assume is its direct competitor, the Yuengling B&T. This Saranac six-pack was good with the Thai food I ate, and the time I’m wasting in graduate school on a Friday night. Elwood (680), Leesburg, Virginia, USA

Appearance: Deep brown color with a fairly solid tan head. Decent head retention.
Aroma: Roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, perhaps a touch of coffee.
Flavor: Definitely on the bitter side with some piney hops, roasted malt, chocolate, some nuttiness, and malt sweetness.
Palate: Medium carbonation with a medium mouthfeel and a medium finish.
Overall: I would have preferred a wee bit less bitterness with this one. Fairly straightforward beer. TheBeerBaron (219), Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 20, 2009 Thick tan head on a dark brown to black colored beer with lively carbonationn. A malt aroma that is fronted by a burned chocolate and molases smell. A potent hops aroma blances the malt. The taste is initially hoppy pine nut and then focuses on a porter-like choco malt. The balance of this beer is well spl;it making it tasteful yet easy to drink like a light lager. This Saranac is one of the best black & tans I have bought in a bottle.
