I liked Shiner 97 which is the only one I had ever had so I couldn’t pass up this 2.99/growler special. I’ve never had much Saranac, but this one has a nice mouth feel and is quite tasty and malty. Pretty good stuff.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 10, 2009 After too much Zonenkinder, time for a bottle of this. Very sweet nose, a little stale roast with caramel. Lighter-than-Coke pour with a sudsy light brown head. Taste initially very sweet, a ltitle bite from the roast up front, and then dries out magnificently. Light sourness with slightly nutty brown ale notes. Medium-light body, smooth, quite nice, really. Surprising depth of flavor for a Matt beer, though my mildly burnt tongue may be shielding my senses from the brunt. No berries, and not a Schwarzbier. Tessic (471), Brantford, Ontario, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 10, 2009 This shwarzbier poured a deep black colour with a quickly lived tan coloured head. To the nose there are scents of caramel, sweet malts and brown sugar. First swig was heavy flavoured but yet slightly watery for a shwarz. Flavours of molassas, malt and caramel most prodominent. Finish is thick and almot oily with a flavour of sweet malts lingering. ALCOHOLNIZM (64), WARWICK, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Pours dark, no surprise, with a medium head. While still quite malty like all black lagers, this is more on the hoppy side than the malty sweet one. A little sour taste lurking in the back. A little bit too thin to compete with the best black lagers. goozen (1088), Leiden, Netherlands

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Nov 21, 2009 En Bouteille. Poured a very obvious dar with a mild head. Pretty nice aroma, a bit watery but still pretty decent for a saranac. Well done overall. Cakes (56), New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, USA

You can taste the caramel with it’s malt sweetness.
Has a very creamy head. Braincage1 (139), Cary, North Carolina, USA
