Commercial Description:
In the dusk of winter, when you come in from the cold, grab a Saranac Black Lager to warm up by the fire! This black, German style Schwarzbier has a full body and dark chocolaty flavor. Look for hints of coffee and waves of maltiness that will make you warm and "roasty".

The aroma is malty with some chocolate, hops, and a touch of metal and wet dog. The appearance is cola brown with a medium sized head. The flavor is like the aroma with a nice roasted finish. The palate is average. Overall this is a good beer.

12 ounce bottle from the winter sampler. Pours a clear dark ruby color with a thin to moderate sized head. Decent head retention and good lacing. Aroma of dark lightly roasted malts, caramel and raisins. Taste is roasted malts, nutty notes, caramel, leafy/minty hops, cherres. Medium bodied. The best in th sampler so far.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large brown head. The aroma was maple, molasses and a touch of cocoa. The flavor was tart, bitter and a bit malty with moderate floral hops, a touch of fruity hops and hints of vanilla, cocoa and marshmallow. The finish was moderate length, dry and toasty. Medium body. Decent.

Smell of toasted malts, lighest hint of chocolate (not really enough). The appearance is a deep brown, ruby hue, off-white head. The flavor is toasted malts, light chocolate, no hint of the chocolate, roasty flavors which are indicative of the style. The finish is light hop bittering, followed by a malt sweetness, actually odd. The mouthfeel is medium, high in carbonation burn. Ok, but far from great.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark black with nice off white fizzy head. Smells of roasted coffee and dark malt. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, and malt, nicely balanced by slightly sugary sweet caramel. Nice body and easy drinkability.

Pours a dark amber with a slight off white head. Zesty aromas of spice, grass, light toffee, light bubblegum, and some wood. Flavors of light wood, slight caramel, slight toffee, and a touch of hop. Kind of boring.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle numbered 2879-0918. When I think of a black lager I think of a much darker pour than this was. It poured a mahogany-ruby red with almost no head on top. The aroma was somewhat neutral and unspectacular with a bit of nuttiness and weak hops. The mouthfeel was a bit better than medium. Its taste was bitter and slightly sour but also unremarkable. I did not notice anything like coffee or chocolate as advertised.
