Commercial Description:
An IPA with a wry twist, Saranac Rye IPA is an aggressively hopped brew, sure to take your taste buds on an adventure. We’ve stepped away from the mold of typical IPAs and selected premium rye malt and a unique mix of spicy hops. Look for a crisp, brazen finish.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. There is no freshness date on the bottle but it did come in the new 2009 winter pack so I have a good idea of how fresh it is. Appearance: It has a light amber body with very good clarity. The head is just off white in color, tall and foamy. It has a good two finger thickness which hangs on well and makes lots of nice lace patters on the glass. Smell: The aroma has a mellow hint of dark rye bread and very mild hops. Taste/Palate: The flavor has a light bready malt base with mild clover honey like sweetness that lets the flavor of the rye come through. Spicy and dry leafy hop flavor comes in close to and into the finish which also has a balanced hop bitterness lingering for a while. Its body has a good medium feel with just enough soft carbonation. Notes: The Saranac Rye IPA has very good balance of flavors but I think hop heads will be looking for a little more hop flavor. Still, I feel that this is a wonderful beer and a very drinkable Rye IPA.

Aroma shows aggressive piney notes, but with a somewhat unpleasant cattty overtone. Pours a gorgeous clear amber with a thick rocky white head. Nice sticky lacing accompanies. Flavor starts off slightly nutty, but quickly amps up the hops with an earthy bitterness that lasts long into the finish. A bit on the thin side, I would have liked a bit stronger malt backbone. The rye plays a role in dry bitter finish.

There is a special palce in my beery heart for saranac. First beer that I can remember that gave me a variety pack. Pours yellow oarnge some brown. Smell is hoppy mettallic indicator. First taste is resin and spruce sap laced with chewed up green grapefruit rinds. Oily soapy palate. Looks nice in glass. On style, tho perhaps average in the hopp ale effect. Long rude bittter linger. Nice looking carbonation in the glass but barely any in the mouth.

Dec. 28, 2009; 12 oz. bottle (part of an uneven winter sampler). Gold color; thin head; grapefruit aroma; slightly-sour & tart citrus flavor; palate is surprisingly astringent & dry. Another generally inoffensive, "variation-on-a-played-out-theme" brew from Upstate New York’s masters of it.

Nice IPA. Crisp flavors with a generous portion of hops ( it is an IPA of corse). Tastes is refreshing and sharp. Good amount of carbonation and slight citrus flavors. I would drink a few more, but wouldn’t go out of my way.

Pours a deep orange. Aroma is mild citrus and some toffee with the malted rye. Flavor profile is citrus, grapefruit, and a slight rye sharpness. Pleasant

Bottle. Pours gold with a thin head. Lightly sweet malt aroma with some faint notes of spicy hops. The rye malt is much more evident in the flavor, some light piny and floral hop notes combine to make a pretty decent winter IPA.

pours clear pale straw gold with a fluffy off-white head. aroma is light, mostly bitter pine/slight mettallic and fruity notes with a slight spicy hoppiness. flavor is slightly bitter and spicy, rye comes more in the aftertaste, builds with time. finish is dry, bitter, long lasting. not as many ibu’s as i would have hoped, but not bad.
