Commercial Description:
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #4, honoring the birthday of Warren “Schmaltz” Marti, President of Schell’s from 1969-1985. Literally translated as “Black Beer.” Often referred to as a “Black Pils” due to it’s higher hopping levels. In reality, Schwarzbiers are neither truly black, nor as hoppy as a Pilsner. Schwarzbiers are a regional specialty beer from southern Thuringen and northern Franconia in Germany, and most likely began as a variation of the dunkel. Rich, mild, and remarkably well balanced. Lighter in body than its black ale counterparts with notes of bittersweet chocolate and vanilla.

TAP: at Buster’s on 28th in Minneapolis. Dark amber color with a reddish tone, head dissipates very quickly. Thin/light on the palate, with vanilla and chocolate tones. A surprisingly decent beer from Schell’s.

Oddly golden color with a thin head. Fairly grainy, dusty aroma along with a very light bit of roasted malt. Taste is much the same. Moderately hoppy finish.

On draught at the Happy Gnome in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a clear dark copper amber brew with an average creamy beige head that has some nice retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of toasted dark black malt, some dark chocolate with a hint of vanilla and some flowery hops. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt and some bakers chocolate. Finish has a toasted dark malt aftertaste with hardly no bitterness. Though this schwarzbier is one of the lighter in color it still has the aroma and flavor of a schwarzbier.

Draft at Buster’s on 28th. Pours a dark copper/brown body with red hue and thin, off white head. Aroma and flavor of malts, bread with a hint of vanilla and cocoa. Very drinkable with a clean finish.
