Commercial Description:
This legendary beer style has a richness of history to match its rich flavor. The beer was named in Einbeck, Germany during a city celebration where the strong dark beer was being served. It seems that a bock (the German word for goat) entered the grounds unseen. Soon after, one of the villagers was knocked to the ground. The bock was standing nearby and to this day it is still unclear whether it was the beer, or the bock, which leveled the villager.
Ingredients: Pale, Caramel, Cara Pils and Black malts, imported Hallertau and domestic Cascade hops.
Available January through April.

On draught during Winterfest 2009 in St Paul, MN. Pours a clear dark reddish brown brew with a thin beige head that slowly dissipates to a thin off-white ring. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, chocolate, a hint of berry and some citrus zest. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with flavors of roasted dark malt with chocolate, some caramel, and a hint of dark pitted fruits. Finish is semi-sweet with a malty caramel aftertaste with very little bitterness. Would love trying this beer via hot poker method during the Schell Bockfest this year.

Pours reddish brown with a quick thin tan head. Aroma is strong caramel as soon as the bottle is opened. Lighter woody/cherry fruit tones and a hint of alf.. Flavour is toasted malt, medium sweetness. I can also get the tea like bitterness and some burnt sugar.

(bottle) Pours reddish brown with a light tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, must, chocolate, and a hint of cherry. The taste is really toasty, with some flavors of sweet caramel, light dark chocolate, and a lingering musty and bitter finish. The bitterness is, as others have mentioned, quite tea-like. Medium mouthfeel. This beer is incredibly sessionable. Nice work Schell’s.

Pours a lighter shade of brown with a medium head. Tastes rich and roasty with hints of chocolate and caramel malts, and a little bit of coffee, tea, and toffee. A very good beer overall.

The new recipe, bottle, pours dark iced tea color with a decent head and lace all the way down my 24 oz glass (I poured two). The aroma is solid caramel malt. The flavor is much the same, and add in some slight tobacco, tea, and butter. The palate is decent and rich. Overall, I like it well enough. My friends in New Ulm are really kicking it up a notch.
