Commercial Description:
This legendary beer style has a richness of history to match its rich flavor. The beer was named in Einbeck, Germany during a city celebration where the strong dark beer was being served. It seems that a bock (the German word for goat) entered the grounds unseen. Soon after, one of the villagers was knocked to the ground. The bock was standing nearby and to this day it is still unclear whether it was the beer, or the bock, which leveled the villager.
Ingredients: Pale, Caramel, Cara Pils and Black malts, imported Hallertau and domestic Cascade hops.
Available January through April.

One of my favorite beers of the spring season, especially on tap. Very malty beer with hints of chocolate and roasted nuts. Absolutely delicious.

Dark red, brownish color with a very thin head. Aroma of sweet malt and toffee. Strong, very strong, fresh grain taste. It’s like jumping into a combine after the harvest. Some toasted malt and caramel as well. Distinct yet light floral hop finish. Really quite good. Schells was always a decent brewery, but they have gotten a lot better recently.

12oz bottle courtesy of Buebie poured into a pint glass. Pours a deep clear copper with a one inch off-white head that recedes to a ring and leaves no lacing. The aroma is mainly roasted caramel malts but with some dark fruits, especially raisins. There is a hint of hops in the nose as well. The taste has an initial sweetness of caramel malts with some toasted grains in the background. Some earthy hops are present though very subtle. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with lots of carbonation and very smooth going down. This is a great bock with great complexity but still extremely drinkable. I really enjoyed this one.

The new recipe, bottle, pours dark iced tea color with a decent head and lace all the way down my 24 oz glass (I poured two). The aroma is solid caramel malt. The flavor is much the same, and add in some slight tobacco, tea, and butter. The palate is decent and rich. Overall, I like it well enough. My friends in New Ulm are really kicking it up a notch.

Pours amber brown with an off white head that dissipates fast. Aroma is sweet and malty as expected from a d bock. Caramel with a light undertone of hops. Some roast in the aroma as well. Medium body with light carbonation. Hops come through in the finish with a slight bitterness which offsets the sweet malt profile nicely. Very drinkable, sessionable at that. I enjoy the nice hop bite on the finish. Good.

On draught during Winterfest 2009 in St Paul, MN. Pours a clear dark reddish brown brew with a thin beige head that slowly dissipates to a thin off-white ring. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, chocolate, a hint of berry and some citrus zest. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with flavors of roasted dark malt with chocolate, some caramel, and a hint of dark pitted fruits. Finish is semi-sweet with a malty caramel aftertaste with very little bitterness. Would love trying this beer via hot poker method during the Schell Bockfest this year.
