Medium poofy tan head. Sweet malty aroma. Likewise sugary-sweet malty flavors, almost raisiny. Just an OK offering. incutrav (576), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA

The dark isnt bad really, but isnt what you would expect, sliglty more coffee flavor then the Carmel, but still not quite what i was looking for. Dont knock Schell as a brewery, its a great place, and a great tour, and they really have a nice line up of brews! hair-old (137), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 1, 2006 On tap at Old Chicago. Thin head (although when poured into a large liter mug, they all seem to come that way). Deep red body. Caramel nose. Nothing overpowering. Watery and somewhat malty with little/ no hops to speak of. Okay but this one is not keeping me interested at all. Very average beer. Not as good as some of the others in the Schell lineup. oldrtybastrd (1846), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 28, 2006 Pours a nice medium amber color. Nice roast aromas. Flavor has a roast almost burnt grain flavor to it. howie (549), DeForest, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 27, 2006 A small bit of toasty, nutty character, but not much. Like three parts bland pale lager and one part bland American brown ale. KSS (102), Plymouth, Minnesota, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 28, 2005 Brown color with average head. Very much what you would expect from a dark American beer. Not much to distinguish it in taste, although not offensive.
