bsp77 (191), Minnesota, USA Oct 30, 2009 Poured from bottle into water glass at work.
Pale cloudy yellow. Looks orange when held away from the light. A relatively aggressive pour plus the high carbonation produces a fast forming foamy head but subsides faster than I would like without much lacing.
Smell of bananas, bananas, bananas. Also some cloves and light hops.
Despite the smell, the cloves are stronger than the banana taste. Mild wheat maltiness, with maybe a hint of hops at the end (unless that is just more clove).
Pretty high carbonation, fairly light but slightly creamy.
Easy to quaff Hefe. Very, very refreshing, and one of the best American made Hefeweizens, as it is truly German in style.
13mikey (117), New Hope, Minnesota, USA Aug 12, 2009 Golden in color, slightly cloudy. Fresh aroma with a yeast element and a hint of lemon. Clean and very smooth mouthfeel. Tangy flavor, citrus notes. Very good beer. Alopex (28), Crystal, Minnesota, USA Jul 20, 2009 A great brew and very underrated on this site. Hazy yellow color with a slight clove aroma and a slight touch of bannana to the wheat maltiness. Fantastic beer. bluemooner (229), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Jun 29, 2009 Pours a hazy yellow with a medium white head. Very fragrant hefe consisting of fruits, spices and wheat primarily. More flavor than I expected including fruits such as bananas, apples, oranges, and lemons, spices including cloves and coriander, and wheat which was not overpowering. Very tasty hefe and I will drink again. MrBunn (1520), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 19, 2008 Bottle. Very pale yellow body with a medium haze to it and a fluffy, white head. Aromas are nice enough… a little bit of grass, some lemon and a touch of corn syrup-like sweetness. Flavor is a bit watery, but pretty good. Underlying the cloves and grass is a light malt sweetness that plays nicely against the spicy yeast and hops. Finishes with a little bit of a banana & lemon fruitiness with some cloves.
esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Oct 25, 2008 Hazy banana yellow with a thin white head. Aroma of banana, yeast and citrus. Taste of banana, yeast, fruit and some light bubblegum. Finishes a little dry, a little spicy. Another above average beer from August Schell. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Aug 16, 2008 (bottle) Pours a hazy light gold with a white head that quickly fizzles out. Aroma is initially pretty pleasant, with some banana and a lot of vanilla. The smell loses a bit of its strength as it warms, and takes on more of a bready character. Some clove and cinnamon kick in as well. The taste is far superior to other substandard hefes, and lacks that watery, lemon, and mineral-like quality that poor hefes possess. The flavors are all there, the banana, bready yeast, and light clove spiciness, but everything is a bit toned-down for my liking. The finish is crisp and clean with the appropriate twang of wheat, and the body is medium. This is a highly drinkable offering from Schell, but as with other Schell beers, it is pretty middle of the road flavor-wise. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 5, 2008 Picked up a single 12-oz bottle from Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-hazy golden brew with a thick white head that slowly dissipates to a fine film and white ring with some spotty lacing. Aroma of mild banana esters, golden grain malt with wheat, a touch of cloves, and some tropical fruit. Taste is smooth, medium bodied, with a nice hefe banana flavor, some cloves, honey and some fruit. Finish is semi-sweet, mild clove and banana aftertaste. Nice!
