Commercial Description:
A top-fermented, dark ale brewed in the true German style. Made with Pale 2-row, Munich, Caramel, Chocolate and Black barley malts, this is a full-bodied ale that offers great depth. The word ‘delicious’ doesn’t do this beer justice.
Now available as a Winter seasonal in November and December.

Pours dark brown, small almond head. Roasted malts mainly with a touch of chocolate and caramel malts and a smokiness in the background finished with what seems to be northern brewer hops with its green leafy taste. Smooth medium mouthfeel and a roasty kick, almost like a black & tan. I think this would be a good change over beer for people new to craft beer.

Having a bottle of this at Bodega Brew Pub downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin USA. Poured with a nice, full, thick, rich, foamy, textured, light tan head with lots of lace. Odd definite Bavarian Weisse aroma and flavor character to it. Other than that pretty dece. NIce softness to it, both in flavor and body. Good beer. Session beer.

I am sad I found this beer at the end of its run for the winter! I love this style more and more. Pour was a dark brown/almost black with a thin tan head. Aroma of malt and fruit. Taste was like iced tea(?). I don’t know how else to describe it. Thick and complex, yet light and refreshing. A few more Altbiers like this and I may have to change my "favorite style"

Flinty, matilic but well balanced with malt. Creamy on the tounge. Hint of cherry on the nose. A little strong for game playing but good for sitting around wth friends. Gets better as it reaches warm temperatures

Ever since I heard the intriguing name schmaltz alt, I‘ve been wanting to try this. I’ve been very happy, for the most part, with most Schell products. My interest grew more as I became more familiar with alts, one of my favored styles. I’ve also tasted Southampton and Erie alt. This 12 oz bottle has a cool label, though different than the other Schell styles. I am curious if that is Auggie on the front. Once poured into the steeler stein, the color is dark ferruginous brown and a froth of a thin tan head. Ubiquitous beer aroma laced with uncooked bread and roasted background hints. Not overly strong smell. Has a gustatory delight of roasted medium light bitterness. Feels like its trying to be a stout but never gets there with the choler overtones. Interesting and fun to drink. Frabjous medium low fizz and carbonation, not watered down. Overall a fine example of a good respectable beer. Finish has a short low to medium malt bitterness.

It’s a good beer, for what it is: An American knock of a German style. The color is a nice deep red (almost black) color, with a nice ,malty aroma. It is just missing something to make it more like an alt.

Right out of the fridge, nothing spectacular, but the flavors got much better as it sat in the glass. I would suggest letting this one sit in the glass for a few minutes if it is coming out of a fridge. Great head retention, some still visable when I finished. Lacing all the way down the glass. Very good aroma throughout. Another good beer from a great brewery.

Pours a nice reddish black color with a nice dark tan head. The lacing is very good on this beer and stisk around long after the slowly dissapating head. Aromas of banana, ripe fruit, bittersweet chocolate and toast. Flavor is very simple compared to the nose and definately gives some of the chocolate and banana, as well as a slight smokey bite to accent the medium carbonation.
