Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 13, 2008 A sufficiently warmed bottle pours into my glass an opaque, dark brown, nearly black, with rambunctious cocoa-brown foam up on top.
Aroma spills out chocolate at first, nuts and cola, warm, rich malt, soft cream, and a hint of vanilla. A bit roasty, with a touch of espresso. Nice.
Smooth once on the tongue, but roasty and sufficiently gritty. Substantial heft in the body of this, a judicious use of malt, and just a little hops. Clean and smooth in the drinking, but a solid stout in all respects. Lingering spice and coffee grounds in the finish, but it wipes clean in time for another sip.
An easy-drinking stout, and a welcome addition to the August Schell line.
Good work, Dave!
bluemooner (77), Rogers, Minnesota, USA Aug 7, 2008 Pours a very dark brown color with a light brown head which is quite foamy. Creamy taste with hints of chocolate and roasted malts. Not much hop flavor to speak of making this a very mild and drinkable beer. esjaygee (733), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Jul 31, 2008 Dark brown with a thin brown slowly fading lacy foamy topper. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and some sweet malt. Taste of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt. Creamy, tangy and somewhat sweet, flavors came out as time moved along. zeke626 (215), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 29, 2008 22 oz. bomber as Schell Stout, although I had this back in 2006 as Snowstorm. Pours an almost opaque, dark brown body with red hues and a short-lasting brown head. Aroma of sweet malts, chocolate, and oats. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Flavors of lightly roasted malts, sweet malts, and cocoa along with hints of coffee and dark fruit. Coffee finish. IlanMan (530), Winona, Minnesota, USA Jul 19, 2008 Pour was dark with a lightly chocolate smelling dark tan head. Beer was very smooth for being a sweet stout but it was enjoyable. I got flavors of light chocolate, sweet malt, and a little bit of oats. Seemed to be a well blended stout and I liked it. Not too much burnt character or hop bitterness. Again, well blended. If anything, it could use something to stick out a little more, anything. Would drink again. Busted_Flat (408), Edina, Minnesota, USA Jun 25, 2008 Poured black with a dark brown head. Malty aroma. Taste was very subltle with some malt, coffee and cocoa. Very smooth, thick and creamy.
