Jet black. Tiniest garnet highlights. Thin, sudsy tan head. Big bourbony and vanilla-oaky nose; very sweet but at the same time quite palatable. Creamy medium body, surprisingly light. Woolly carb. Coffeeish base beer with some chocolate notes. Creamy nice vanilla and bourbony notes complement that beautifully. Great stuff.
750, capped, ’07, thanks, BVC! Cracked Nov 08.
Black with ruby and caramel highlights. Very light tan rim. Much more pronounced vanilla sweetness on the nose than the 06 showed. Other than that, picks up more coffee on the mid-palate than the 06 but is essentially the same beer.
Even with a fearful lineup of big black stuff to get through tonight, drinking this beer made us all worry whether it might all be downhill from here. It’s really good. GoddessOfThunder (877), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 30, 2008 I took bad notes on this one... Lots of oakiness with a thick, sweet, chocolate flavor. This is very rich and heavy on the palate. I really enjoyed this, as I usually enjoy rich stouts. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours a nice black color with a light beige head and the smell is strongly of smooth bourbon and lightly of chocolate. Taste is balanced with lots of chocolate and bourbon. Medium to full body with a medium to light amount of carbonation. Flavorful, semi rich and smooth with no big flaws at all. Very solid and enjoyable!

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 28, 2008 750 ml. Pours almost black with some ruby highlights near the bottom of the glass. Aroma of chocolate and roast; bourbon, oak, vanilla, molasses- a touch of booze but not overpowering. Taste is roasty and moderately sweet with chocolate dominating and a bit of roast, with some molasses, bourbon, wood, vanilla. Pretty well put together, but I expected a fuller body for the style, and a darker color (opaque black). An above average offering for sure. pineypower (1102), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 27, 2008 Pours black with a moderate taupe head. Aroma of alcohol, vanilla, oak, bourbon and some roasted malt. Taste is complex, oak, vanilla and bourbon come together with some caramel, roasted malts and some alcohol. Rather well balanced, bourbon never overpowered this at any point. bhensonb (4339), Woodland, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 26, 2008 2007 capped bottle. Very dark brown color with a humongous tan head. Aroma is quite heady - alcohol, bourbon, dark malt. Full bodied with mild carbonation. Flavor of dark fruit, alcohol (though it’s not heat exactly), treacle, wood, light coffee and chocolate. Finish is smooth and chocolate. TeamTrappist (399), jericho, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 19, 2008 2007 Vintage. Poured a slick black with a very thin copper head. Inviting bourbon nose with sweet notes. Flavor was solid in that the barrel aging really complimented the stout as opposed to overpowering the flavor. Nice caramel, oak. malt flavor with some sweetness, and more than a hint of alcohol. Quite good. adrian910ss (1429), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
