Commercial Description:
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

2007 bottle. Pour is dark brown with a small brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, oak, vanilla and caramel. Flavor pretty much is the same...very good. Very full and creamy body. Smooth and drinkable. Better than many higher rated imperial stout.

750 ml bottle 2008. Pours black and a rich oak and bourbon nose. Flavor is roasted malts, strong oak and alcohol presence. Additional subtle flavors of chocolate and vanilla. Creamy mouthfeel and medium to full body. Overall, decent Imperial Stout but still a bit harsh. I think this beer needs to mellow out in my cellar for a while.

Bottle: Pours dark brown, with some light coming through at the edges. Has a boozy nose- lots of vanilla/bourbon sweetness, and soft oak. Slick body and fairly hot. The flavor has an aggressive booziness upfront with hot vanilla and heavy bourbon. Only mild chocolate malt character comes through with late roast & oak which aren’t very cohesive. Not very well balanced, and gained too much sweetness and not enough oak from the bourbon barrel.

2007 bottle shared by me at RBSG 08. Pours a deep dark brown with a beige head. Strong vanilla presence in the nose. Medium bodied and somewhat thin for the expectation of the style. Strong flavors of chocolate and vanilla, with some non-aggressive dark roast. Bitterness is somewhat tame. Bourbon and oak come out on the finish. Not bad

Pours a light thin brown with a thin tan head. Does not stand up to my aesthetic standards. The nose is subdued, sweet, lightly smokey, shows alcohol. The flavor is roasty, sweet, thick bourbon, warm. Seems like another example of a poor base beer barrel aged to cover it up. Warm mouthfeel with a very prominent bourbon finish.
