Commercial Description:
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

Thanks much to Stlwill for sharing. Pours a dark denseoaky brownish black. Very swet boubony nose with a nice dose of floral hoppiness and a nice hint of chocolate and spice. Mouth is kind of thin mouthfeel but very ever present bourbon and chocolate. The alcohol is pretty present and dominating, but a solid beer nonetheless.

750ml bottle poured in a snifter. SBBAIS pours a beautiful black with a gorgeous tan head. This beer looks noble and delicious. Unfortunately that is where it stops. The aroma is all bourbon. The flavor is like watered down bourbon. There is little to no room for the beer flavor to come out. The mouth-feel is fine, chewy and thick like a great stout should be. The original Schlafly Imperial Stout (circa 2005) was a 4.5+ beer. They totally ruined one of the worlds greatest imperial stouts by going the bourban route.

(750 ml bottle, 2007) Pours very black with small tan head. Great bourbon, oak and roasted malts aroma. A rich, full bodied brew with long bourbon finish.

(750ml bottle, 2007 vintage) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of toasted bread, cocoa, light sourness, and watered-down bourbon. Flavor of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, bourbon and light vanilla with a dry finish.

Lumpfest 2008- Thin black in color with a soapy head. Good burnt malt but no bourbon: are my notes wrong that this was supposed to be BA’ed?

2007 Bottle: Nice off-white head on top of dark pitch body. Aroma is of alcohol, malt, treacle, and cask. Flavor a bit on the bourbon-y side, though I guess that is what they advertised. Palate is more like Porter than Stout.

2007 reserve. Way to much bourbon flavor for me. Cover up some possible good flavors? Doesn’t taste much like beer to me. Couldn’t finish this one.

Lumpfest 2008 - very black pour with no head. lots of bourbon and roasted malts on the nose. great thickness and the bourbon really is noticeable in the taste. i’m looking forward to having some more of this greatness.
