Commercial Description:
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

2007 750ml Pours black with just a little head. Aroma is very rich with chocolate, oak, and some bourbon. This is very bourbon rich and is so full of flavor that it will knock your palate out.

750ml. pours dense black, little head, tho adequate lacing. the nose hits with plums, anise, bourbon (though not overt), and dark, over-ripe fruits. the flavor is interesting. first taste is a bit overwhelming. from then after, it improves. flavors of dark ripe fruits dipped in sour candy, the bourbon hits on the finish, which lingers for a while. the heat from the alcohol is very noticed on the finish. toasted caramel sticks are also noticed on the flavor. the palate is rich and chewy. great beer, decent stout.

Black with a lasting off-white head. Chocolate, some nuts and some oak in the aroma. Soft and sweet flavour with a tannin punch. A touch of bourbon, and a rather simple aftertaste.

Bottle @ thewolf tasting. Pours a black colour with a nice light brown head leaving a good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits, wood and alcohol. Good mouthfeel. Tlavour of roasted malt, bitter chocolate, alcohol and oak. Bit sting in the roasty finish.

Bottle @ tasting at my place.
[thank you, drmatt]
2006 vintage
Pours a deep brown with a red shadow on the sides. A medium creamy beige head on top that leaves good lacing. Aroma is oaky, vanilla, nuts and good chocolate. Soft and round feel. Flavour is more fruity than in the aroma. Raisins, roasted malts, tannins and dark chocolate. Good Impy, but the average og 3.85 is probable very telling.

Sample from a bottle. Pours black with a small off white head. The aroma is roasted malt with dark fruits. The flavor is again heavy with the roasted malt and dark fruits. There is also the slightest hint of coffee. Not as thick as I would like. Overall, not bad.

750ml bottle. 2006. Black body, tan head that diminishes. Aroma of oak wood, licorice, molasses, coffee and sweet malts along with a slight hint of rubber. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately bitter and lightly acidic. Bitter, though short, finish. Medium body, watery texture. The nose seemed a little laid back in intensity for an imperial stout. Still, there was a nice balance between the oakiness and the rest of the aromas and flavors. This is not overpowering, but is very drinkable and there’s something refreshing about that.

A small brown head tops a black body on this stout. There is the hint of Bourbon, some sweet malt, mocha java, charred wood, and vanilla wafers. Too much carbonation and too thin for a stout, let alone an imperial one. The flavor showcased the aromas but the lack of body, of a robustness, detracted from the experience. Nice try, though.
