Commercial Description:
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

A small brown head tops a black body on this stout. There is the hint of Bourbon, some sweet malt, mocha java, charred wood, and vanilla wafers. Too much carbonation and too thin for a stout, let alone an imperial one. The flavor showcased the aromas but the lack of body, of a robustness, detracted from the experience. Nice try, though.

700th Rating-750ml bottle: Pours a deep, deep brown with a recending mocha head. The nose is woody and smokey, with sublte sweet chocolate and bourbon notes peeking through. Big, chewy body is a great vehicle for the style. Sweet chocolate, cocoa, vanilla beans, caramel, marshmellows, along with firewood and tobacco. On top of all that is a great oak and bourbon note that doesn’t overwhelm. Nicely balanced and executed for what is becoming a cliche.

(July, 2008)Pours deep amber with thin tan head. The aroma is wood and vanilla first then turning alcohol booziness, burnt malts, caramel and more booze. The taste is bourbon booze with hints of wood. It then picks up notes of mild caramelized malty sweetness and vanilla before another boost from the booze takes the experience into the finish. I prefer a bit more of the base beer in the flavor than this product has. The after taste has a nice vanilla note at times.

(Nov. 2007)Courtesy jayg. Pours dark brown and not black with tan head. It has a sweet roasty aroma with some molasses and then burnt malts. The flavor is roasted malts, sweetness, hints of molasses that slowly turns vanilla toward the finish. Nice full flavor. There is just a hint of the ABV.

Bottle via trade with drmatt. Aroma of vanilla, alcohol, sweet and roasted malt and chocolate. Lots of chocolate as the beer develops. Pours dark brown with rich ruby undertones. Big khaki head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Sweet roasted malt on the tongue. Vanilla and burnt brown sugar. Wood. Rich dark chocolate notes emerge as the beer opens. Creamy, rich, medium to full bodied. A good beer for sure, but just lacks a little something to put it over the edge.

Bottle from Secret Santa of Summer 2007 (tjthresh). Black with a thin floe of off-white head rotating in the middle of the glass. Aroma has a strong helping of bourbon and oak in equal measure, which I like. There wasn’t too much of a sharp alcoholic note either. Creamy palate, a bit light for a strong brew. A ton of oak in the taste, the bourbon and alcohol kind of come out in the finish, after the brew warms a bit. A well-balanced BB IS.

Dark brown colour with a small beige head. Light roasted malty aroma with vanilla sweet and fruity notes. Vague roasted malty flavor with sweet notes from fruit, vanilla and alcohol.
