Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Mar 2, 2008 Sample at the brewpub. Pours a dark brownish-orange color with a thin dark beige head that dissipates slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Sweet toasted malt and caramel in the nose, along with a touch of almond. Medium-bodied with bready malt, caramel and hops flavors. The finish is moderately sweet with a malty aftertaste. Above average overall. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Feb 7, 2008 Growler from drmatt. Pours a bubbly brownish/auburn with a decent beige head. Smells sweet...candy sugar and a bit fruity. Flavor is sweet with a hint of bitterness. Medium bodied and highly carbonated. This seems very one dimensional. vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Jan 26, 2008 Pours bronze with a small off white head. The aroma is faint - slight caramel is there. Medium / thin mouthfeel with semi-sharp carbonation. Taste has caramel malt, but none of the biscuit that is with many doppels. There is also some medicinal and mineral notes. Not bad, but not worth seeking out. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Jan 20, 2008 Grainy, slight sweetness in taste. Poured golden brown with almost no head whatsoever. Lacks any hints of smokiness. Just average in every way thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Sep 16, 2006 Pour is a dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is malts with coffee and some hops showing up. Flavor is great! Lots of coffee and toffee a with a bit of dark fruit. One of the better dopplebocks i have had, at least made in this country. Hop in the city 2006. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 15, 2006 Tap @ GTMW 2006. Hazed amber-brown in color with a tan ice sheaf riding the surface, about to break. Fruity golden raisins and light cocoa tracts sweeten the nose while shay butter and maple oats pronounce background inferences. Chestnut dust meets English toffee mildness in the flavor, coming across as a bit subdued. Indecisive nuttiness mires caramel apples and a dornish pecan crust similarity. Sweet maple glossed wheat can’t pick up the slack, and the medium-bodied stream is left with its hands in its pants. Cocoa and almond butter move toward the finish with mixed nut dust settling nowhere in particular or memorably. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Mar 11, 2006 On tap at the Schlafly Taproom. Cloudy dark brown pour with a nice cap of dense light tan head. Rather cloudy for doppelbock. Nice light caramel aroma, angelfood cake. Significant hop presense to the flavor, to the point I would say it is almost the main focus. Some of the profound caramel flavors that make a doppelbock nice, but the hops don’t really let that flavor show off. Also a bit green and too fresh overall. Based on the previous ratings, I’m wondering if I got a different batch. Not a lot of other people complaining about the over-hopping, and I don’t see how you could miss it in what I’m tasting. Tone down the hops and age this another few months, and this could be wonderful. It tastes like it has potential. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Feb 22, 2006 On tap at the Taproom, 2/18/06: Robust reddish brown with a thin filmy head. Nice sweet caramel goodness. Brown sugar and very smooth but with a neat little kick of alcohol. Excellent.
