Commercial Description:
This is the traditional German lager for Springtime fasting. It is a big beer with a deep brown color and a rich, malty flavor. (Available early February.)

This rating was from the Hop In The City event where brews from the previous year were sampled (5 oz) by the attendees from kegs. This brew poured a medium sized head of fine to large sized mostly lasting light brown colored bubbles that left behind a transparent brown colored body. The aroma was a mild malty one mixed with something else that I could not pinpoint. The mouthfeel was bubbly and slightly tingly. Its flavor was somewhat like a German Doppelbock, but it was missing some of the character. it was too mild in its flavor of malt mixed with something else that I could not quite put my finger on.

On tap at the Taproom, 2/18/06: Robust reddish brown with a thin filmy head. Nice sweet caramel goodness. Brown sugar and very smooth but with a neat little kick of alcohol. Excellent.

Dopplebocks are one of my favorite beer styles, but unfortunately this one was off the mark to be considered a good Dopplebock in my opinion. The head was small sized, tan and it contained fine-large sized bubbles that mostly dissipated. The body was uncarbonated and mostly clear with a brown hue.The nose was lightly malty, sweet and fruity. The flavor was lightly bitter with an aftertaste. The mouthfeel of this beer was a little tingly, smooth and medium bodied.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a dark brownish-orange color with a thin dark beige head that dissipates slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Sweet toasted malt and caramel in the nose, along with a touch of almond. Medium-bodied with bready malt, caramel and hops flavors. The finish is moderately sweet with a malty aftertaste. Above average overall.

Pours bronze with a small off white head. The aroma is faint - slight caramel is there. Medium / thin mouthfeel with semi-sharp carbonation. Taste has caramel malt, but none of the biscuit that is with many doppels. There is also some medicinal and mineral notes. Not bad, but not worth seeking out.

Sweet, malty, dark bready aroma, some toffee. Pleasant medium red-brown in color and a creamy, lasting, off-white head. Flavor has a nice blend of flavors, toffeeish malt, some spicy, yeasty fruitiness and moving to a lightly acidic, bitter, faintly nutty, bready finish with a dim flourish of banana. Different but enjoyable.

Tap @ GTMW 2006. Hazed amber-brown in color with a tan ice sheaf riding the surface, about to break. Fruity golden raisins and light cocoa tracts sweeten the nose while shay butter and maple oats pronounce background inferences. Chestnut dust meets English toffee mildness in the flavor, coming across as a bit subdued. Indecisive nuttiness mires caramel apples and a dornish pecan crust similarity. Sweet maple glossed wheat can’t pick up the slack, and the medium-bodied stream is left with its hands in its pants. Cocoa and almond butter move toward the finish with mixed nut dust settling nowhere in particular or memorably.
