Commercial Description:
This is the traditional German lager for Springtime fasting. It is a big beer with a deep brown color and a rich, malty flavor. (Available early February.)

On tap at the Taproom, 2/18/06: Robust reddish brown with a thin filmy head. Nice sweet caramel goodness. Brown sugar and very smooth but with a neat little kick of alcohol. Excellent.

Hop in the City - the best of the tasting. The sweet malty aroma waifs heavily from the glass, highlighting notes of toffee, bittersweet chocolate and raisin. The big, rounded malt body is a mouthfull. More sweet chocolate, caramel, vanilla and brown sugar in the body balance nicely with a slight plum undertone. The finish is fruity and long - Good!

Hop in the City '03: Deep brown redwood, persistant creamy head. . . deep roasted cherries, caramelized raisins, alcohol, sweet flowers, pears and ripe bananas make up a very nice aroma. Sugary candied alcohol flavours with a smooth palate and more very nice Schlafly malt. Good bit of hops in the finish made this one of my more favorite beers at the fest.

On tap from the Tap Room. Dark and ruby brown. White lacing head. Fruity, raspberry nose. Malty and slight coffee nose as well. Fruity flavors and nice maltiness. Coffee notes. Medium bodied and delicious. Nutty character and a long finish. Possibly the favorite of the night.

(Hop in the City) Nice deep brown, not too much head. Very sweet and malty. Just what a doppelbock should be.

From the Tap Room, but enjoyed at home from a growler. Pours a cloudy chestnut color with a decent light tan head that doesn’t last. Aroma is of spice and licorice. Sweet malty flavor with maple syrup and vanilla undertones. Only slight hop bitterness, as it should be with the style. No noticable alcohol in the taste or aroma, but a little warmth in the pit of the stomach. The bartender said this stuff is 7% ABV. Another excellent effort from the guys on 21st Street.

Clear light amber-copper color with a nice foamy lasting white head, sweet fruity and flowery aroma. Sweet and malty with a strong hop presence in the finish, medium body with a sticky mouthfeel, pretty hopped up for a dopplebock, I will have to try it again after things settle down and maybe re-rate.

Pours tan with a strong red hue, big head and great lacing. Aroma is sweet and bready with some hop "pepper". Flavor is spot-on for the style, sweet caramel malts and some stronger roasted flavors, balanced by mild hops. Great balance.
