Commercial Description:
This full-bodied traditional English-style ale is brewed with a high gravity and extra hops, which originally helped to preserve the beer on long voyages from England to India.

I rate this more as in imperial IPA though it is kind of more in between a single and a double. Actually I could have used a bit more hop...maybe my bottle was a few months old, but actally tasted kind of like a hoppy barleywine. color is clear orange with nice lsting head of tiny bubbles. feels thick and piney in my mouth with a sweet, slightyl alcoholic finish. Pretty darned good.

A respectable IPA. I have had several incarnations of this beer. I have had the Hopbacked version, the first brewing where it was extremely dry and English, and the most recent version which included more American hops and was a bit more fruity. All of the versions were good, but I think that I enjoy the latter one the most.

12 oz. bottle from Duane, thanks Dad! Pale orange pour with a pretty sizable head that left quite a bit of lacing down the glass. Pretty good head retention as well. Well balanced, slightly spicy. Solid IPA!

Rating 1068, bottle purchased from the Schnucks at the corner of Hampton and Chippewa. On sale for 7.50 a sixer. Nose is full, lots of grains and just a touch of rusty hops. Taste is strong on grain and hops, good balance and just a touch of alcohol. I think that if this had just a bit more of alcohol Id go nuts over this. But regardless, this is a quality brew that I will enjoy more of in the future.

2007 edition. Bread aroma; Medium yellow head. Deep golden color. Flavor is not nearly hopped enough (maybe they used enough hops, but if so they certainly used too much malt). Tastes like a Sierra Pale to me (a brew I like as a Pale Ale, but certainly isn’t an IPA in my book). Lingering pleasant balanced taste. Overall ok if I guess if you’re looking for a double pale, but way too balanced for an IPA (in fact, by alcohol content, why is this not a double?). Sorry fellas, I wanted to like you--keep trying.

Bottle, from Duane. A nice IPA, was well balanced, plenty of malt character, along with citrus,Hops, seems like a blend of English, and American Style, and it works very well! Very enjoyable.

Bottle received via trade with drmatt. Pours hazy amber with a spare, fizzy, off-white head, somewhat diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is light malt (cereal, meal), heavy hops (pine, resin, grapefruit), light yeast (sweat) with notes of peaches and apricot. Medium bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and heavy bitterness.

Bottel from Frugal McDugal in Champaign, IL. Pours a pale amber orange with a two fingers eggshell head. Aroma of malt grains and floral hops. Medium bodied with a british texture. Initial flavor of british pale malts, toffee, and citrus with some moderate sweetness. Mid palate has a good amount of orange and apricot countered by a herbal bitterness. Finish is slightly astringent, grainy, and semi dry with some alcohol detected as it warms. This is like a marriage of british IPA (malt) with american IPA (hops). Not bad.
