Commercial Description:
2004 Hops in the City festival beer. Fruity, spicy, aromas and flavors contribute to the complexity of this Belgian ale. Medium body and effervescence contribute to a light, dry impression, despite its substantial strength and sweet, smooth finish.

Appearance: Pours a clear, bright, orange-gold body with a fizzy inch of white head. Smell: Fragrant fusion of juicy fruits paired with top-notch wine liberally coated with sugars rules the nose with the light, delicate maltiness tucked far, far in back. Taste: Toothsome candy sweetness envelops lesser tastes of bready malts and toasted barley. A few sliced peaches and dried figs. Refill! Splash of Essencia Orange Muscat dessert wine garnished with honeysuckle. Meager hint of hops and bitterness. Slight background yeast component. Some alcohol warmth on the fruity, downright winey finish. Refill! Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Moderate carbonation, certainly on the effervescent side of things. Drinkability: A fine, fun beer! For me, the alcohol was quite well hidden, making this one very drinkable, even downright chuggable.

This beer has a nice white head. It is strong in alchol content but, not over powering... it has some belgian flavors... but maintains a budwiser midwest ownership. A nice beer.. easy to drink...

had this at the tap house dwtn st louis....served clear golden, in a pint glass...a grand cru, in a pint glass, slightly strange! nose of apples and raisins, tingly carbination up the nares. on the palate nice light pear fruits bananas and tingly body of carbonation. rock candy sweetness, not over the top. light and easy to drink, with a good refreshing crisp feel. easy to drink on a hot humid day. not nearly as robust as other grand crus i have had, wish i knew the abv.

I was not quite what to expect from this draft pour at the St. Louis brewpub. Came a very attractive rich amber color that was so clear it looked like glass. Nice white head and lacing. Nose of good ripe fruit, with banana on top Smooth mouthfeel. Good flavors with lots of citrus. Nice finish. A very enjoyable brew.

Draft: Hazy toasted banana. Creamy white foam with dispersed rocks that are slow to form. Soft mix of sweet orange peels, crushed coriander, bubblegum, and slightly bready malt in aroma. Herbs, phenols, and mildly chalky yeast elements, underneath. Fluffy carbonation, but substantially fuzzy. Opens well-integrated with a medley of mandarin orange and floral hop flavors. Trace citrus acidity deepens the bready malt frame. It’s airy enough, which helps to contain the rich coriander and sponge cake sweetness. Herbal, slightly chalky yeast components. Subdued mustiness. Pleasantly sturdy malt withstands the fresh orange peel assertions, which overrun the quiet esters. Closes with a chalky yeast stamp, which amplifies the dryness, along with understatedly floral hops and a lengthy aftertaste of coriander and bready malt. To date, this is their most respectable attempt at a Belgian-style. It’s far better-attenuated than their lackluster (candy sugar-laden, extremely wet and heavy) Saison, Triple, etc. etc., and much more elegant and balanced. Sampling this with a clean palate is imperative, in order to experience the array of subtleties. Very light-bodied and appetizing.

pours a dark hay brown that has gold when held aloft. not much of a head, just a ring of white. super sweet nose with some nice phenolics and a bit of rose aroma and honey. trying not to say "a grand cru by any other name would smell as sweet" or something, but i failed. strong sweet sugar and alcohol taste. banana and clove flavors balance this. it is sticky & leaves a pancake syrup likeness in the finish. i like this. some berry flavors really make this a winner. i just wish it was served in a snifter or chalice or something to allow me to enjoy this aroma more.

750ml bottle. Bottle conditioned. Served in a chalice. Lots of carbonation. Poured an orangish gold. Big head that dissipated fairly quickly. Spicy aroma with some sugar and a little banana fruitiness. Fairly dry beer. Malt is there, but not overly sweet. Medium bodied. More spice and burnt sugar. Not terribly complex, but very drinkable. Alcohol is well hidden.
