blipp (567), Grand Island, New York, USA May 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep red/brown with a thin beige head. Sweet malt aroma with caramel and light fruit. Medium/full body. Flavor is again sweet malt with caramel and brown sugar. Hops are noticeable in a rather short finish.
GMUcrew7 (147), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 5, 2008 Pours a nice dark brown with a hint of red and a bubbly beige head that dissipates fairly quickly. Very sweet malty aroma with toffee notes. Similar sweet malty flavor balanced with a roasted nuttiness, some molasas, hops and a warming alcohol finish. Pretty good beer but there are better doppelbocks with smaller price tags. kiefdog (281), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2008 33cl bottle from Total Wine (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown to black with an off-white one finger head that settles slowly. Smells of malt, candy sugar, chocolate, coffee, ripe dark fruit (raisins, prunes, sweet plums), toffee and coffee. Flavor is much of the same -- sweet malt, ripe dark fruit, malt, barley, prunes and sweet plums. Medium-bodied with a smooth, candy sugar finish. Nice. thedm (3405), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 27, 2008 This bottled brew from Indianapolis, IN poured a small sized head of foamy fine to medium sized mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a good lacing. The aroma was mildly vinous with sweet malty notes. The mouth feel was mildly tingly from start to finish. The flavor contained notes of sweet vinous hops and dark malt. EithCubes (1722), Indiana, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle (and a low fill line). Very dry nose, brown sugar and light ash with steady roast. Red berry and muddled fruit with caramel and dark pits. Dark ruby pour (essentially black) with some slightly noisy hard-bop carbonation and a tan head that fades post haste. Taste is dry with a good deal of booze showing through (more than 8.5%, it seems, including numbness), hard roast and nuts with cigarette ash and a musty dry hoppy finish. Ooh, cheeks even warmed! Felt like blushing. Light bitterness with dark, dirty earthen tones. Full body but not fat. Some notes of wood and a slight herbal inflection. Peppery caramel. Whew, top-shelf! But watch out, dangerous. A harsh, mature sipper, and definitely worth the effort.
Maria (3738), Thisted, Denmark Jun 14, 2008 Courtesy of Yespr. The color is beautiful red-brown and the head is creamy, but shot lived. The aroma has sweetness and notes of candy sugar and malt. The flavour has sweetness, notes of grapefruit, alcohol, candy sugar and roasted malt. It’s edgy and the alcohol is too dominant in the flavour.
