Dark golden coloured with small head, clear although some crap is floating around (dirty glassware?). Malty aroma, somewhat smoked. Malty flavour, some smoke with a bit of alcohol shining through. Reasonably complex. Takes some getting used to, but after a few sips i started to appreciate it. I like the whisky notes (but hey, i like whisky). Quite ok.

07.12.06 12oz bottle from the always generous Beastiefan (Eugene). Golden beer, bespeckled with bits, and with a small white head that quickly disappears. Alas, the beer is not flat, just no head. Aroma is delicate, light peat, mild smoke, some wet wood notes, and distant bleach (huh?). The flavor is equally mild with some prominantly tart yeast flavors, doughy, nice fruitiness, and honey. Not much smoke, but rather like a grilled fruit, maybe a plum or a fig, that has taken on some touches of charred character from the cooking. Very light in body with an effy texture. Decent stuff, this, for the most part, and not at all what I expected. High abv is noticeable throughout.

Pretty funny .. Austrian beer named for a myth in Scotland. Anyway .. Poured clear dark goldne, very active, like the air is hurrying to escape into the huge poofy head. The aroma honestly reminds me of pigs in a blanket ... meaty and gravy-like. Likewise, despite the relatively light color, this is a full beer ... richly malty, lightly smoky. Me thinks very many previous raters rated this as if they were expecting a big sugary Scotch ale instead of the subtle, artfully smoked ale they received. This is excellent.

An austrian scotch ale? Bottle says red ale, pours a true golden color with big fluffy head. Sweetish bready nose, and very sweet and spicy flavors. Alcoholic presence, almost like a malt liquor. Somewhat grainy. A bit harsh. Surprised to come here and see it labelled smoked!? They use whiskey malt apparently from the label, but not necessarily peat smoked...?

(33cl bottle) Bieropholie Private Imports. I have to concur with my fellow members review: WTF? It poured a white frothy head and a clear amber body. The nose was weak yet only corn malt. I could not believe the flavour as I was expecting a smoked/Scottish-styled beer and this was, well... not. Even though it has a high ABV and the corn maltiness, it wasn’t terribly like a malt liquor because the texture was watery. This was an all around poor offering from Eggenberg... it best resembles a light premium lager with an elevated alcohol content.

Pours med. golden with a decent, white head. Tight nose, where’s the smoke?? Dry, med. body. Lacks flavour. Slightly bitter finish. Not what I was expecting!

Light and refreshing, kind of malty and sweet, and definitely some citrus flavors. Mildly acidic. Tightly beaded head. Nice finish.
