Commercial Description:
Samichlaus is brewed once a year on December 6, and is aged for 10 months before bottling. It is one of the rarest specialties in the world. Samichlaus may be aged in the bottle for many years to come, as older vintages become more complex. Brilliant deep amber, complex dry toasted malt nose and huge intensely sweet palate. The 2007 bottling is the first bottling since 1986.

Bottle shared by someone at RLB. Pours a deep honey copper and a thinning fizzy head. Aroma is super sweet, honey, lightly toasted malts, and lgihtly floral. Alcohol comes through a bit as it warms seems a bit too syruipy, honey, and floral, fusels, slight citrus twang in the end and a super sweet cloying finish. Meh.

It is orange-golden with a small head. The aroma has sweetness and notes of malt, peach and citrus. The flavour has a strong sweetness and notes of alcohol, malt, light raisin and candy sugar. The finish has notes of citrus combined with peppery alcohol. IMO the alcohol is very dominating, but in spite of that it has quite a nice balance.

Bottle sample at a tasting. 2007 bottle. Clear golden. Aroma of alcohol, malt, caramel and some fresh fruit notes. Sickly sweet malty flavor with caramel and alcohol. Medium, a bit oily, body.

11.2 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours an amber color with a medium head. Poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of stone fruits, toasted malts and subtle booze. Taste is toasted malts, caramel, candi sugar. VERY sweet, reminding me of iced tea, with of course we here in the Southern United States generally prepare as tea flavored sugar water. Anyway. Full bodied.

Orange juice with no head, aroma of pure alcohole and vanilla, grape juice cinnamon and vodka like alcohole. OK

750mL painted brown glass swingtop. "Bottled in 2007." This is one of 12 bottles that came into the state of Vermont recently. Appearance: Almost no carbonation. A clear, orange/gold hue that gets thin and watery at the rim, going more burnt yellow towards the edges. Nose: Sweet Jesus! Candy malt, light caramel, yellow plantains, a quick zip of licorice, candied orange peel, and some prickly alcohol. Palate: Medium bodied, almost no carbonation, and a little hot and sweet up front. As the sugar-shock fades, toasty malt notes come out. A little creme brulée, Marcona almonds, a faint whisper of citrus, a touch of ripe banana, and sweet buttered oak. A warming finish of alcohol carries the flavors on for minutes after the sip. Notes: At 14% ABV, this beer is surprisingly balanced. It’s hot, and a little prickly, but it doesn’t feel like 14. 10 maybe. The finish is incredibly long, and the ageability of this beer is out of this world. I might have to buy some for my children...maybe it will be mature by then! Oh man. The finish is amazing. The banana/plantain thing comes in and out of focus for minutes after the sip. I’m going to go make some seared dry-rubbed Pollack and some red beans and rice to have with this!
