PorterPounder (2812), Tallahassee, Florida, USA May 9, 2003 2001 - Ok - so the bottle says "the world's most extraordinary beer". Well, I wouldn't go that far - but it is pretty damn good. Pours with a deep amber color and leaves a slight, quickly dissipating head - probably cannot survive in the alcohol! Aroma is like a fine bourbon with a bit of sweet pipe tobacco thrown in. Flavor - like bourbon, with a bit of malt thrown in. Hard to believe this is 14% ABV - while evident and apparent - it does not overwhelm or distract. Not sure why I bypassed this so many times - must have been the cheap looking bottle (hear that marketing folks?). Palate - goes down smooth - coats the belly well. Will remember this one this coming winter.
alexsdad06 (620), Ohio, USA Aug 22, 2008 2007 bottle. Pours a crystal clear copper color with a small dirty white head. The aroma is sweet, alcohol, some caramel, and slightly fruity. The flavor is a whole lot of sweet malt and alcohol. Dark fruitsmand a little vanilla make a small appearance. This is on the thick, oily side of things. I think it may be a bit too sweet for me. Borresteijn (509), Amstelveen, Netherlands Aug 19, 2008 2005 vintage. Reddish brown colour, thin white head. Aroma is strong, very malty and alcoholic, glue. Flavour is very sweet and malty, which spoils it for me. Too sweet. Can’t get any of the other flavours out. Thick and creamy mouthfeel. Didn’t enjoy this at all. joekinty (177), rockledge, Florida, USA Aug 12, 2008 1996 vintage thanks homer321 Very great aroma strong sherry notes thick and syrupy very complex great beer SCBrew (19), San Clemente, California, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours clear Redish Brown. Very musty aroma that turned to sweet as the beer sat. Very sweet and alcoholic . Too sweet for me. MonsterMunch (3), Newbridge, Ireland does not count Aug 12, 2008 brewed 2007 - A dark clear beer with the scent of strawberry jam. Slightly less jam on the taste and a finish like a tawny port without as much of the sweetness.
Definitely one to have in your stocks as the best before date is seven years after birth but would probably last longer.
