Poured clear gold with a very small foamy white head. Aroma is sweet and slightly vegetal, a bit of interesting woodiness on warming. Taste is pretty nice - sugary and oaky, off-dry reisling, and there’s alcohol bitterness on the finish - good winter warmer. Mouthfeel is bitter and astringent and a bit syrupy, although thin. I like it, but it’s a bit like a watered down pale port. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA

The aroma is crazy with lamp oil and toothpaste and some kind of fuel. Mollasses is also very present. hammenlind (738), Sundbyberg, Sweden

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 24, 2005 Aroma straight away reminds me of its 14% big brother, but with added baked beans which puts me off a bit. Taste is sweet and syrupy, alcohol is dominant, and a great warming feeling, but just not my style of beer to sweet and not much else apart from honey. artfink (28), I’m everywhere Fokker!, Florida, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 17, 2005 pour very light. not what you would expect from a bock at all. nice head forms...then vanishes. not much carbonation to keep it there. smells of baked fruits and candy. hints of plums???! in the taste, sweet, honey. very alcoholy in the aftertaste. this will definatly warm yer innards on those nights when the windows rattle from the cold. thebeertourist (2799), Oslo, Norway
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 2, 2005 Strong nutty developing into fruity aromas, with hints of honey. Clear amber colour with almost no head. Sweet, with fruity notes, hints of honey and nuts, yet ending with a yeasty dryness. Oily and rather soft texture, like velvet. Warming alcohol. One for those coming cold nights... csbosox (1081), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 19, 2005 11.2oz bottle. Served in my NB worthy glass after a very short time out of the beer fridge. Pours copper with a hzay head. Aroma is simple caramel and floral honey. Sweet aroma. Large mouthfeel. The taste is sweet citrus, honey, and a touch of alcohol. The finish is far from balance on the sweetish side. There is some hops and alcohol on the finish, that helps tame the malt, but the beer is pretty sweet. Tasty, but a pretty poor, albiet strong, version of a doppelbock. rajendra82 (703), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 15, 2005 Coming in a brown, 330 ml bottle, with attractive gold on black labeling, I was expecting a beer looking like an “original bock”. Instead the beer poured out pale golden and clear, like a modern lager. The head was rather small in size, as can be expected at this strength. The beer exhibited a grainy and floral bouquet, which was a little too clean. The alcohol was also evident in the nose, but not overwhelmingly so. The taste was not very bock like, but closer to a light bodied sweet lager with spices like pepper and vanilla, resembling quite a lot of strong pale ales from Belgian abbeys. The warmth of the alcohol was present as a potent reminder of the careful sipping this beer demanded. The yeast imparted a dusty dryness and an earthy bitterness, both of which are rather uncommon is a German style lager. As I got deeper into the glass, the beer seemed to become sweeter, and perfumey. The beer was not too thick on the palette, but had enough malt body to keep it from being too adjuncty. Not too traditional, but enjoyable enough to try if you haven’t.
