Commercial Description:
Tradition reborn - Eisbock Kraftbier, a beer with patina, over 100 years old, once prescribed as a medicine for weak recovering patients - is currently celebrating its renaissance as URBOCK DUNKEL EISBOCK. Brewed with special dark malt and fermented with traditional Eggenberg yeast, this beer has a maturation period of up to nine months. Dark brown in color with an alcohol content of almost 10% by volume, URBOCK DUNKEL EISBOCK has a pleasant, full, and creamy body, with the aroma of coffe, surprisingly light on the tongue despite the alcohol content. Warming with toffee-like malty sweetness, balanced by a hoppy-bitterness in the finish, it is a power beer, as its traditional Austrian name says, best enjoyed after dinner or as an evening drink.

I am nearly astounded to see that this is rated so much higher than Eggenberg’s other Eisbock which I found to be vastly superior. Though this is no sloutch to say the least. Pours a dark chetnut hued red. A bit of foam forms upon finishing but it diminishes nearly competely on standing a moment as is common in the style. This is a tasty but simply sweet malt-monster with the flavors that come with it--raisin, molasses, plumb, caramel and maybe some toffee. The mouthfeel isn’t particularly thick or interesting though there is a pleasing dose of bitterness in the finish along with some roasty chocolate notes. The most impressive feature of this fine beer is how amazingly smooth and easy drinking it is at nearly 10% ABV--I won’t but I could seriously chug this stuff. This is really a wonderful thing in a high gravity beer. It shows the brewers put the pateince and respect into the beer by letting it age at the brewery for extended periods. Bravo! Let this baby get real nice and warm--close to room temp--before you drink it. A certain elegant complexity comes out at higher temperatures. I was foolish and drank about half of mine before it really woke up. Learn from my mistakes!

Mmmmm. Prunes, coffee, chocolate, toffee, alcohol, sweet malt aromas. Rich brown with what quickly turned into nothing more than a tan ring for the head. Coats mouth with its sweet cocoa caramel maltiness and then yeah, maybe, there’s a hint of hops at the back of the mouth as it finishes...but it’s mostly just very sweet. Almost too much but it never quite goes that far....damn fine brew.

2003 bottle. Dark amber with more dominant brown tones, some light beige tones and a bit of deep orange color on the edges. Rapidly disipating beige head and quite clear. Smells like rich cocoa, sweet caramel and toffee, old, dry prunes, and a touch of old coffee. A touch of sour yeast and a good dose of alcohol round out the nose as well. Flavor is caramelly, with some burnt malt notes in the background. Dry grapeseeds and barley, alcohol and figs. Finish thins out somewhat and has alcohol and more caramel. Kind of a stale brown bread finish, with notes of sugar and liquor soaked raisins. Body is thick and chewy up front, very rich palate, but thins out a bit too much on the end. Moderate carbonation. Nope, all the filtration doesnt work on this one. Seems stale and spent.

Who stole the Aventinus and relabeled it? No wait - this is better! Since this is the original recipe, maybe the boys at Schneider need to pay some royalties. This brew is sweet - literally. The aroma is strong in tobacco and and largely reminiscent of a scotch ale with some toffee. The taste is of a roasted heath bar. The malt is so dense and the mouthfeel so excellent. I can see how this was used medicinally. You MUST drink this at room temperature.

High alcohol content is well hidden. Very sweet flavor. This is a good beer, but was honestly a little too sweet for me, especially after gettin to the end of the bottle.

Poured a clear, medium brownish color with a small off white head. Aromas and tastes of plums, raisins, toffee, breads and alcohol. Smells are stronger than the tastes. Medium sweetness. You can tell there’s alcohol in this one.

Pours with a one-finger head that fades to a ring leaving almost nothing. Deep, clear amber color. Low carbonation. Nose is malty. Medium bodied. Starts sweet like plums and raisins, finishes mellow this is NOT a session beer - the high ABV is not noticable. $3.19 for a 330ml bottle from Liquor Barn Lexington, KY.
