| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 16, 2004 This eisbock pours with a deep amber/red body topped by a thin white head with some lacing. The aroma is very sweet and malty with notes of candy sugar and caramel. The flavor is sweet and full of candy and malt. It reminds me of root beer barrel candy. There is a slightly bitter, spicy note in the background. Full bodied, smooth and slightly warming. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | May 10, 2004 Mild dark fruit aroma with alcohol quite noticeable. Clear, dark brown body with thin, shy, off-white, fully-diminishing head. Alcohol very apparent also in the flavourwith roasted malts, some caramel and some fruit also. Short flavour with lasting roastiness. Very dry, thin and still. Sampled with MartinT and Rastacouere. Bottle. Rastacouere (5564), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | May 9, 2004 Ruby hints on a clear dark chestnut brown body. The head is thin, off-white, fully diminishing. The nose reveals at first obvious alcohol, hot brown sugar, plums and lots of heat. There’s no doubt we’re dealing with samichlaus’ brewer, although their eisbok appears more balanced. Vinous taste with plenty of heating alcohol if that’s your thing. Overwhelming to me and I feel it’s hiding good things. Trying harder, I notice dark fruits and a big bready profile as well as cloves, but I just don’t enjoy the way its melted, although a few years could definitely help it a lot and make it more friendly. The mouthfeel is nice though, rather creamy and somewhat thick. I’m just not a fan of such an alcoholic example when kulmbacher can do so much more with a 1% deficit. | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 7, 2004 This is a beer meant to be savored, not slammed. Its gorgeous deep garnet color is as inviting to the eye as its malty nose is to the olfactory lobes. Smooth as silk, with notes of coffee and vanilla melding with a carefully applied hop presence, this is one of the best fireside beers you'll ever have. What's that you say? You don't have a fireplace?
Strike a match and watch it burn as you sip this wonderful example of the brewer's art. Can be enjoyed in summer as well--but not in the daytime before using a lawn mower.
I use a goblet-sized brandy snifter glass.... vwsteggie (684), Paxton, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 31, 2004 Has a dark ruby/brown color with light carbonation and little lacing. Smell is of malt/caramel/spice. Taste is also of malt/caramel/spice and finishes smooth with little bitterness. Overall a great dunkel beer. daalamar (403), bardstown, Kentucky, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 21, 2004 I'm wondering if this style isn't what I want it to be. Original aventinus is one of my favorite brews, but the Eisbock...not so much. The same holds true here. Pours a brownish color with a small head. Aroma is sweet and has some spiceness. Flavor is also sweet with almost no hop to balance. Don't know ..I may have to do a horizontal tasting of this style to get a better grasp.
