Commercial Description:
A robustly presented aggressive ale, built with 5 specialty malts and justly hopped to build a huge American stout, featuring smooth roasted-chocolate flavor and a big black malt finish. Two different hops secretively give a contrasting balance to the structured malts.

Draft at MBGF. Poured a black color with an average light brown head that diminished slowly. Light roasted malt aroma. Medium to full body. Light sweet roasted malt flavor with a medium finish. Tastes a little soft, but had strong competition this day.

Sample from a growler at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. Two Stouts whose labels feature an axe being wielded. Cool. This beer is blackish-brown with a medium and foamy light brown head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists mainly of coffee along with hints of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Medium, smooth body with a tasty chocolate and coffee character, along with light hops and malt. The finish is mild and roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Better than expected, I would try this again.

On tap at Schmohz. Deep chocolate-brown body, thin persistent tan (almost ochre) head. Milk chocolate and toast in the aroma, which was hard to detect when the beer was cold. The operative word for the flavor is "chocolate!"; the emphasis on chocolate made this very porter-like. Besides the chocolate, there was a hint of dark fruit/caramel to go along with toasted notes and earthy hops. A touch chalky and bitter. Medium-bodied, rich, and not too complex. A solid beer, but I’ll have to try this side-by-side with their porter to work out the differences.

12oz Bottle. Very savory roast aroma. Comes at me with a mouthful of mushroom umami and a chocolate-glazed grilled duck breast. Roasty, but with some monsters hiding behind the roast character. A crepping sense of uncleanliness. For now, I’ll live with some faint chocolate dryness in the nose. Pours relatively dark, with a red-brown edge and a decent soap of coffee and cream. Yay! Clean beer. Kind of...a lot of dust coming through fast, but it may just be somewhat strong roast character. Anyway, a decently-bodied, relatively fresh dry stout, with a good amount of graham cracker, honey and strong dry chocolate, dark. Kind of bland and metallic, but clean and fresh, with a bit of a hop balance on the backend. The roast character is actually decent. I think this would be fun at double the gravity or half. But, somehow it’s a little mediocre as a regular old stout. Not much caramel or browned sugar depth. I shouldn’t be complaining, this is drinkable. Thanks Sean!

Watery black pour with a brief tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and butter. Taste of chocolate, coffee grounds, some dirt. Pretty bitter, almost chemical. Goes done pretty quickly and smoothly. Finishes with some permanent marker. Really thin mouthfeel. I get this beer, but its not what it pretends to be. It’s certainly not huge, merely an average session stout.

Bottle from bottle shop on Alpine, Grand Rapids, MI. Opaque black with creamy brown head, real nice. Aroma is dry roast and purple (oxidation?) fruit with slight lacto infection note, coffee, starts out nice but leads to a weird finish. Flavor is sweeter roast with purple fruit, coffee, a little mettallic. Medium to thin with light carbonation. One of the better of Schmohz beers but still not my cup of tea.

this is a pretty decent PORTER....not a STOUT, but a PORTER; dark brown appearance with thin medium brown head; aroma of chocolate but was somewhat difficult to pick out much else; flavor is of chocolate also, with a touch of toastiness...thanks to Rob for making another porter

looks decent, but the head is far too white to intimidate or strike fear into my heart, smells like piss, honestly, like stale urine, not a bad flavor, slightly roasty a little dry on the finish, watery body, I agree with badnews, when i took the first sip I said "this is a porter, remind me not to try their porter", but i do enjoy free peanuts and popcorn
