bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Apr 17, 2009 On tap @ the brewpub. Beige head, not much in the aroma maybe some toffee. The flavor has some chocolate and toffee but I also got some weird flavors, maybe soy, I didn’t like it to say the least. Thin and a bit funky. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Mar 19, 2009 On tap at Schmohz Brewing Company. Black with a thin tan slowly fading head. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, mild chocolate and coffee. Taste of dark and roasted malts with some mild chocolate and coffee mixed in. Mild dry finish with a touch of roasted malt astringency. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 7, 2008 MBG Winter Fest 2008. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Moderate toasted chocolate malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. ElBorracho (472), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 3, 2006 On tap at the brewpub. Poured dark brown with an off-white head. Light roasts and molasses that grew stronger as it warmed. Thin and unremarkable. aobecksy (661), Middle of no where, Ohio, USA Aug 2, 2005 Mich Ale Fest 05...No wonder Tom was mad...looked like coca cola, thin and grainey, Robust??hardly. Nothing interesting here...but less than offensive AustinMilbarge (681), Denver, Colorado, USA Apr 26, 2005 A little bland when cold, but opened up a bit as it warmed (duh). A little watery in the backbone. A little vinous. Not bad effort. Some good notes of carmel, a little coffee, and minute amount of chocolate. Roastiness throughout. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Dec 25, 2004 dark brown to black appearance...a nice smooth palate...wonderful lacing!; flavor is that of a typical porter (roasted and toasted notes, hints of chocolate and coffee with some nutty flavors)
try this new place out in Grand Rapids Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Dec 23, 2004 On tap at the just-opened Schmohz taproom. Deep red-brown body, thin cream head. Dry roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate undertones in classic porter vein. Nice dry roasty flavor, somewhat woody, with dark bittersweet chocolate and a touch of coffee cream. Slightly acidic and quite toasty. Nothing too unique but well-done nonetheless.
