trevor211 (81), Seattle, Washington, USA May 10, 2008 Pours *syrupy* - a murky, muddy brown with almost no head. This certainly isn’t a looker. The aroma is nice - it doesn’t mislead - smells exactly like what it is, a concentrated hef. Sweet, bubble-gummy malts abound. Notes of caramel, maplewood smoke and raisins, too. Tastes *delicious*. This is far better than any other weisen I’ve ever had. It’s thick, and coats your mouth, and what is usually sickly sweet in a weisen is now earthy, with a wealth of dark malts, wheat, caramel and spices. It has a seriously strong and complex (deep!) flavor, but manages to maintain balance. This is one of my new favorites - if nothing else for its novelty, and I’m now very excited to try more eisbocks...
thickfreakness (52), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle number 04472 from the 2006 batch Tasted on 4/01/08
Pours a dark amber color and has quite a head that fades very quickly but leaves no lacing. I can tell it is pretty carbonated just because it sounds like a cola after I pour it. Smells like I would expect from a bock up front with some wheat smells afterwards. Raisiny, malty, a little bit of wheat, and a hint of alcohol coming up the rear. Tastes absolutely phenomenal. A smooth mellowed out caramel, malty taste with a hint of the wheat but very little alcohol. The alcohol really sneaks up on you in this one since it comes in at 12%. The mouthfeel is really smooth and goes down easily. Its very drinkable but I can’t see myself drinking much else for a while after this.
carl4beer (249), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Aug 17, 2008 11.2 oz. pours brown with small white head. aroma is dates figs prunes and malt. taste is more of the same. the alcohol is modestly present. a good eisbock... Kaga (1), Muncie, Indiana, USA does not count Aug 16, 2008 A very unique aroma - alcohol, malt and a strange scent I can’t describe. Brown with a off-white head. Personally I prefer them to appear a bit more bold at this level - but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Very strange sediment. Taste is nutty with cloves and spices. Creamy finish.
Overall a great beer - VERY original and holds its own in a very high league.
Girlfriend Review - "Holy shit goddamn, that is the nastiest shit I’ve ever tasted!" jonno (151), Japan Aug 15, 2008 A great beer, obviously a concentrated version of the weizen bock. I think the younger sibling has the upper hand, just for the fact that the alcohol can be a bit too cloying here. Still a great brew though ajm (304), USA Aug 14, 2008 I’d have this again in a flash - aroma of caramel and dark plum, flavors of raisin, fig, roasted/fermented fig/plum/dark grape and nicely balanced with roasted malt. A hell of a beer - really reminds me of a quad. Actually reminds me a little of Westy 12 specifically, which I hope doesn’t get me shot. A beer that’s fab at any temperature.
