| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2007 Aroma of dark malt, banana, clove. In front of halogen the color is deep reddish mahogany. The beige head was substantial, but left rather quickly. Medium to full bodied. Creamy carbonation. Starts with lots of banana, nearly paint thinner so, caramel malt, and noticable clove. The finish is a bit gritty, banana, spice, and some malt. There is a full banana bread aspect in the end. It has a finishing sour note, but the malt and banana balance that. It is certainly marvelous. heemer77 (4312), Savannah, Missouri, USA

Aroma has bubblegum, clove and some peaches. The flavor is too sweet at first, but gets balanced out with bitterness toward the end. Lots of peach, banana and vanilla. A little malt. The high alcohol content is not tasted or smelled at all. Body is medium with some chewiness. Tried again recently, an excellent beer. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 1/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 16/20 | Oct 6, 2003 Updated: Nov 10, 2005Complex aroma with lots of sweet fruitiness and a touch of smoky spice. Big off-white, large bubbled fully-dimishing head on an opaque golden-amber-brown body. Sweet banana esters start the taste which opens up to a rich maltiness which then gives way to a residual bitterness and an almost tart flavour with some yeast and alcohol mildly apparent in the finish. Medium-full body and rather effervescent on the tongue at the start but carbonation is not long lasting. This is one to savour and reflect on. It’s a complex journey for the senses - and I bet the carbonation issues are non-existent if you get this in Europe. Bottle. BBB63 (4238), La Porte, Indiana, USA

Color is a nice ruby brown and it is medium-bodied. Detected raisin/prunes, bubblegum, roasted malt, and bittersweet chocolate in the aroma, very nice! Sweet, fruity, and spicy tastes rush to the forefront followed by a warming honey sweetness, not aggressive, but you know the alcohol is there. Very complex beer. Great mouthfeel and nice lingering sweet and sour taste. Yummy. Among the very best beers I've ever had! RERATE: Poured into the same Aventinus glass shown to the left, the head now remains and the aroma is even more pronounced. Again confirming my opinion that this is among the world's greatest beers! cgarvieuk (4198), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 1/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 28, 2002 Initially impressed. I’m not a fan of wheat beers or lagers (even dark ones), but this has loads of flavours bundled together in an attractively spicy package. The dark lagers (Bocks & Viennas) are more complex and flavoursome than Pilsner type lagers, though they seem to fall into the same trap as rose wine - being neither flesh, fish nor good red herring. This Aventinus, however, seems to pack quite a punch. There is, however, quite a lot going on for a thin bodied beer - too much for a simple refreshment which is what most thin bodied beers are good for. An interesting taste to accompany the lager is very pleasing, like a well strummed acoustic guitar, but a 32 piece jazz orchestra is a little too much. As I continued to drink I found that the orchestra was a little too intrusive, that there was not enough sweet malt body to comfort my increasingly tortured palate. The medicinal tastes began to overpower, and I started to feel I was in a hospital undergoing open throat surgery without enough anaesthetic. Skinnyviking (4157), Copenhagen, Denmark
