DrBayern (879), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Apr 23, 2008 Bottle on 4/19/2008. I was expecting the massive head of a German hefe, but this was a medium head, quite sturdy and durable, over a hazy gold, so it still looked pretty darned good. Very floral aroma, with notes of cloves, and the fruit esters characteristic of the style. Light body and medium effervescence that supplemented the clean palate and slowly building dryness. Flavor showed a restrained honey sweetness, followed by some light acidity and even a hint of sourness, with a soft, dry, but not particularly bitter finish. this is a great brewer, and this beer lives up to their standards, even if it’s not on the same level as Aventinus.
MBison (335), Southern Highlands, Australia Jul 4, 2008 Bottle (500ml). Poured a pale muddy brown with a hint of yellow and a small, rocky, white head which was mostly diminishing. Aroma had strong notes of sour yeasty malts and cloves with some straw, lemon zest, orange citrus, dried banana, coriander and hints of nutmeg. Flavor had strong notes of sour bready malts and cloves with tart lemons, orange citrus (mild), dried banana, coriander, some nutmeg and hints of pear. Well hidden alcohol content. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a creamy mouthfeel and a good finish. Needed a bit more carbonation. durhambeer (298), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 1, 2008 500ml bottle. Interesting hazy golden/orange color on this beer with a nice pillowy big white head. Sour yeast, wheat, bananas, coriander and a little clove on the nose. Bigger taste than I expected--seems like a decent amount of malt to back the beer up. Sweet taste in addition to the sour/citric/spice notes. Very solid. pepperford (59), robbinsdale, Minnesota, USA Jun 24, 2008 yeasty and alcohol aromas. quite sweet with a bit of banana with the maltiness preventing the taste from getting too out of hand. theisti (953), Leawood, Kansas, USA Jun 19, 2008 500 ml bottle purchased at Lukas, KCMO. Pour is a hazy golden copper with a firm 3 inch white head. Pretty in the glass. There is quite a few small carbonation bubbles slowly floating their way to the top of the glass. Aroma is a citric sour wheat and freshly cut hay. Some yeastiness in the back of the nose. Taste is mostly the wheat, sour, lemons, some nice yeastiness to the finish. Palate is medium and quite mouth coating. Refreshing beer. maltdog (397), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 17, 2008 Gusher! The half-liter bottle oveflows immediately upon opening; in my glass, the explosive froth settles into a pale amber liquid, murky with floaties and overzealous carbonation. Head retention: zero. Pleasing musky aromas of chamomille and bubblegum wrapper, lemon, bread dough, and flowers. The taste starts as a cointoss between spice and candyish honeyed plum … and savory flavors win as the beer finishes with spiced pumpkin pie phenols. Nearly banana-less, and featuring a refreshing, though brief, tartness. Oddly, as carbonation wanes, so do the interesting flavors, leaving only a thin, reedy citric sensation. The lifeless, watery palate is oily with an almost chalky friction. If any other aspect of this beer were as good as the aroma, it would kick ass. As with most things, "organic" is again a sales gimmick and not an indication of quality.
