Bottle brown, 500 ml
Appearance: Pours dark red to brown, strongly roasted body, body carbonation is rather gentle, head is brownish, cappuccino like, very nice in colour in deed, foamy to frothy, leaving gentle lacing, initially medium, slowly decreasing to small.
Aroma: Rusty, roasty, reminding me roasty white meat like the one of chicken, no fruity accents, strong black ashy roasted barley malt, classically simple according to its style, notes of coffee, dark dessert chockolate, some notes of cacao, no sweetness present.
Flavour: Salty and roasty to ashy front, later on nice notes of herbal - citrussy Pilsener like bitterness become present, very nice pure roasted barley grains displayed on palate plus strong bitter-tangy-astringent hoppy touches. Tastes in fact like sharply bitter dark version of the Classic German Pilsener without hint of sweetness.
Palate: Body is medium, texture is dry, carbonation on palate is moderate to low, finish feel is highly astringent, grainy, very clean, salty, slightly sour, mineral, complex and impressive.
janubio (157), Spain Aug 22, 2009 500 ml bottle. Black colour, brown head that dissipates too quickly and leaves no lace, not what one expect for the style. Bad start. Smell is roasted, some coffee and a bit metallic. Taste is a little better, but very fainty, coffee, caramel, roasted. I was expecting much more from this one. At least is drinkable. delnoche (210), Germany Jul 10, 2009 50cl bottle poured into a dimpled mug. Very dark amber with two fingers tan head. Aroma is a bit roasty. Flavor is roasty, nutty, a bit bitter. High carbonation. Bitter finish. Not bad, pretty drinkable. mcdav2154 (289), Germany Jun 20, 2009 Poured a very dark brown that’s almost red when held up to the sunlight. Beige head that disappeared too quickly for my liking and no lacing. Smell wasn’t very impressive but did have some roasted coffee to it. Flavor was pretty good with some bitter cocoa, smoke, and coffee. A little too watery for a great score. Drinkable. Quack-Duck (3128), Bodensee/Schwarzwald, Germany Mar 2, 2009 bottle, bought to marinate the wild boar joint and try the rest. Clear darkish brown colour, large beige head. Watery, bitter with only the tiniest hints of caramel and bitter chocolate. No hints of malt. For my taste not even good to marinate the wild boar - used Lobkowicz dar beer instead. Jukkabro (2981), Tampere, Finland Feb 19, 2009 (BBE 12/08) Near black colored with medium sized beige head. Aroma is roasted with slight cardboard, sweet caramel is also here. Medium bodied. Flavor is also roasted with more cardboard and grains, aftertaste dries with hops. Slightly watery beer.
