A very alt-like vienna style lager. Very malty and slightly sweet in the nose, hints of toast and toffee, and slight earthy hops. Light on the palate, biscuits, caramel, chocolate, hazelnuts, with slight esters and a dry, hoppy finish featuring spicy, earthy noble hops.

This was a great dark beer. It had an interesting initial taste but the darkness held and gave it a great ending flavor

Aroma: Grainy malts, a bit of lemony zest, probably from the hops, a long drizzle of honey and just a drop of coffee. Appearance: Topaz-peach, clear and satiny body with a sudsy off-ivory head. Big bubbles, poor retention, and no lacing, but what a pretty color. Flavor: Tasty, well-balanced, and smooth. The sweetness from the malts does not overwhelm the palate. Slightly nutty. Undercurrents of toasty banana bread, punctuated by a minor uprising of citric hops. Vague diacetyl character as well. Palate: Smooth and creamy, but with little, sharp, tingly bubbles. Surprisingly full-bodied but still light on the tongue. Overall: This beer is a no-brainer; nothing out-of-the-ordinary going on, but quite delicious and easy to drink.

Pours a nice darkish amber, topped by an inch or so of nearly white foam. Decent head retention, a little bit of lacing. Mild caramel malt in the aroma. Good malt flavors here - with toasted malt being the most prevalent. Some caramel malt and some grain round it out nicely, making it almost but not quite sweet. It finishes closer to the dry side, but not all the way dry, providing a tasty toasted malt finish. Good noble hop balance throughout, becoming a little more prominent in the finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation, this beer is smooth and very soft. Another very drinkable Schwelmer bier that I truly enjoyed. I think I’d like to try a three-liter mug of this sometime - preferably with some cheese, knackwurst, and a tall blonde gal named Helga.

Pours a hazy, lazy amber with a hint of caramel color and a soapy, off-white head. Roasty, malty, nutty aroma. Flavor is smooth and malted with sweetened cereal grains and caramel. Beef broth notes after salty foods. A little thin in body but the flavor is still allowed to linger. To dub this "sessionable" would be an understatement. I finished my first 6 pack one night without even thinking to pick up a pen to rate it. Depsite its minor shortcomings, it deserves a top overall score as it inspired me to drive back to the bottleshop to purchase two full cases before they ran out. (That doesn’t happen as often as you’d think.) It also received rave reviews from friends of mine who are "occasional" beer drinkers... and I always enjoy when I can turn them on to something new.

Deep amber/brass color, very effervescent. Solid thick white head, slowly dissapates leaving good ring of bubbles. Aroma of malt, grain, slight yeast. Taste is malt and hops, with herbal, almost medicinal, notes and a hint of toffee and pumpernickel. A bit bitter in the finish. Bubbly, sparkly mouthfeel.

Another great beer from Schwelmer. Incredibly this beer has a strong malt flavor, but it not extraodrinarily sweet. A very good beer if you come across it, so Schwelmer’s Altbier.
